Zina Grynewytsch, 70, died Monday, March 24, 2008, at Mary Immaculate Hospital. She was born in Vinnitska oblast of Ukraine and as a child managed to survive both the Soviet and Nazi atrocities of World War II, finding refuge in a displaced persons DP
Camp in the American Zone of Germany in 1945. She and her parents were fortunate to be able to immigrate to the United States in 1951. She resided in Brooklyn for the next 13 years where she completed high school, attended Brooklyn College and NYCCS and worked for Warner Brothers. A peninsula resident for the last 36 years, she enjoyed many activities, especially gardening, bird watching, cross-stitch embroidery, painting, jewelery making, and wood arts and crafts. She loved people and enjoyed many friendships established as an Avon Representative, an employee at Busch Gardens, and league bowling. She was an active member of the Tidewater Ukrainian Cultural Association TUCA and was well known for her “kapusta” dish.
Zina is survived by her loving husband of 44 years Anatol, a retired USAF Senior Master Sergeant, daughter Christine Darby and her husband Mark, grandchildren Zachary and Nicholas, and special lifelong friends in upstate New York.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 28, 2008, from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 AM at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 60 Travers Rd., Newport News, with Father George Chioros officiating. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at 2 PM on April 16.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to “An Orphan’s Bright Star”, a 501C non-profit organization, 431 Biscayne Blvd., El Lago TX 77586. Please reference “Kremenchuk Baby Orphanage”. Contributions are tax deductible.
