Winford Wayne Smith

NORFOLK-Winford W. Smith, 88, went to be with the Lord on March 4, 2014. Winford was born September 11, 1925 in Jones County, NC. He is predeceased by his first wife, Iris Brown Smith; his parents, Beadie Collins Smith and DeWitt Smith; 3 sisters, Juanita Vassos, Zeta Jenkins, Mellie Valianos; and 4 brothers, Clifton Smith, Clayton Smith, Casey Smith, and Newton Smith.
Left to honor and cherish his memory are his wife, Kay Deal Smith; daughter, Susan Smith Bateman husband, Scott; sons, Stephen Smith and Mark Lowe; sister, Dorothy Chrisman; and grandchildren, Katelyn Bateman, Alex Bateman, Noah Bateman, Jacob Bateman, Michael Lowe, and Mason Lowe.
After graduating at the top of his high school class, Winford went on to serve his country in Europe during World War II as a member of the US Army, Infantry Company K, 4th Platoon. Following his time in the service, he attended The Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary and the University of Richmond. After receiving his degree, he held various jobs, most notably with Master Auto Tire Company and the Loan Department of Sovran Bank.
Winford faithfully served the Lord as an active member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Norfolk. Prior to joining the congregation at Wesley, he was a 43 year member of Colonial Avenue United Methodist. He enjoyed fellowship and service with the United Methodist Men and participated in the NEST program as well as many other community outreach projects. He loved his church family and expressed particular interest in reaching out to members who were unable to attend worship services. He served many years as a greeter and made sure that all the church ladies received Sunday hugs.
Winford also volunteered for many years with the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities. He always had a joke or a smile to share and was willing to help anyone in need. He was blessed with many wonderful friends, neighbors, and family members and always found joy in their company. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren at family dinners and celebrations. He rescued and cared for countless pets and other animals in his lifetime and he took great delight in communing with nature and the wildlife of Mason Creek as he tended his back yard garden.
The family wishes to thank all the friends and neighbors who have expressed their love and admiration for Winford through prayers, cards, and acts of service. We are truly grateful.
A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 288 E. Little Creek Road, Norfolk, VA 23505, on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his honor to support the missions and ministry of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.
