Virginia Beach – William Edward Hodges, born 79 years ago in Scotland Neck, North Carolina, died March 13th in the arms of his loving wife of forty-six years, Clara Cordon Hodges.

Bill served 30 years in the Navy, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1984 after serving tours on the USS Valley Forge, USS Duxbury Bay, USS Randolph, USS Manley, and USS Piedmont, and in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, Edzell, Scotland, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jacksonville, Florida, and Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia. Bill continued to serve his shipmates by managing the enlisted clubs at NAS Oceana, winning four stars for the clubs in 1991.

Bill was predeceased by: his parents, Floyd and Rena Hodges; his sisters, Janet Carter, Ann Hodges, Sylvia Parker and Judy Allsbrook; and, his daughter Patricia Ann Gallagher.

Bill is survived by: his loving wife; his son, William E. Hodges, Jr. and his wife, Karin; his daughter, Robbie Sue Orick; son-in-law, James Gallagher; his grandsons, Arlo Baker, Gabriel Baker, David Wayne Orick, and Daren Hodges; his granddaughter, Morgan Hodges; his great granddaughters, Cassie Akers and Autumn Marie Orick; and, his brothers Robert F. Hodges and Neil H. Hodges, and his sister Geraldine Staton.

He will live on in the memories of all of his friends too numerous to name; Bill loved everyone, and everyone loved him.

He was active in the Kempsville Church of Christ, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of the Beach Tones for 12 years.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2008, at Kempsville Church of Christ, 5424 Parliament Dr. in Virginia Beach, with minister Randy Childress officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Albert G. Horton, Jr Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Rd in Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family would value contributions to the Disabled American Veterans. Condolences may be offered to the family at altmeyer.com.

Bill and I Were both in S3 Division together 61-63 We were both Barbers. Bill was like a big Brother to me always looking out for me.There is just something special about Bill I know all our Shipmates would agree.These last 4 Reunions Bette and I attended have been so special to us in seeing Bill again and meeting his wife Clara and all the other Shipmates and Families.Lets just Celebrate Bills life and remember him often.Oh,and by the way some of our Shipmates will know what I mean ” BILL WAS THE BEST BARBER THE VALLEY FORGE EVER HAD” Ron the Singing Barber

Bill will be missed by everybody that has ever served on the Valley Forge, He is one of a kind and I know of three shipmates that will never forget him me being one and the other two are Vince DeSantis and John Sims. Bill, We all will never forget you. Jack and Yvonne Lynch

I did not know Bill while he was on active duty, but I knew him well while he worked the clubs at NAS OCEANA.

He was a great asset to the clubs and truly cared for his customers.

I was the Oceana C P O Club President when Bill was the Club Manager/He also handled my retirement and my daughters wedding receptions. BILL was a great leader and person. Hewas also a great NAVY CPO!!!!!! MAY GOD REST YOUR SOUL. Robbie/Lisa Cline

My deepest sympathy To Bills family.

I was not on the Valley Forge with Bill but got to know him at our reunions. His sense of humor was enjoyed by all. Bill is at peace now and in still waters. Farewell to a fellow sailor.
