Crew Members of the USS Atakapa

Crew members of the USS Atakapa share the loss of William B. Gott – Commanding Officer 1964 to 1965 and will be missed not only by his family but by all the shipmates at ussatakapa.com. He has now been welcomed home by his departed shipmates.

Our sympathies are with his family and loved ones. The Atakapa was a fleet tug that was commissioned in 1944 and decommissioned in 1981. During her service to the US Navy, she traveled the oceans around the globe many times. All those who served aboard the Atakapa share a special bond and have many great memories of the friends we made and ports we visited.

Dear Kim – sincere condolenses on the loss of Bill. I first met him back in the 70s while I was on temporary duty at SURFLANT and then saw him infrequently at community gatherings. He was always highly enthusiastic, dedicated and a “class act”, no matter what the subject or activity. His cherry spirit and friendship will be missed but I know he’s smiling down on us all.

Dear Mrs. Gott:

Bill and I served together on the USS Atakapa from 64-65, He was the CO and I was his XO. He was a good boss and Commanding Officer, his men really respected him and enjoyed being assigned to the ship. I’m glad to call him a good friend and our paths crossed many times during our careers, I’m truly sorry for your loss.

I first met Mr. Gott as a volunteer for The Salvation Army. He was such a wonderful person to meet and know. Later when I was hired to work for TSA, he and his lovely wife, Kim always made sure our summer day camp, HOPE Center Child Care and HOPE Program always had some yummy goodies. Mr. Gott always had a smile, kind words for others and was a friend to all. I am forever blessed to know Mr. Gott and will remember all the loving care he gave to his friends at The Salvation Army. May God truly bless your family and know we are praying for you.

I served in USS Atakapa, and I have never served under a better commander. Capt. Gott will always have a special place in my memories.

To the Bill Gott family. We were so sad to hear of Bill’s passing, and we are firm in our faith of his eternal life with Our Lord.

We knew Bill as a true Christian who was generous and kind, always ready to help in any way he could, especially giving us a “hand” when we worked at pulling weeds in our yard.

Kim, we pray for you and your extended family. God Bless you.
