“The Signing Santa”

Wiley Martin Smith, 75, went home to be with his wife, Louise King Smith of 40 years, and the Lord on April 9, 2008. He was born in Roseboro, North Carolina on April 20, 1932. Wile was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He retired from the Composing Department at the Virginian Pilot after a combined 30 years of service. Wiley helped build the Deaf Missionary Church in Norfolk, Virginia. He was a Deacon and Treasurer of the church. In 1978 he became the Signing Santa for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Handicapped children in the Hampton Roads Area. He retired from being Santa after 28 years in 2006. He was a true family man who put his family first and helped others without any hesitation and never asked for anything in return. He was loved by many and will be truly missed by all.

He is survived by his four daughters; Debbie Smith and Gary Beaver of Ocala, FL, Becky Klutts and husband Joe of Virginia Beach, VA, Wendy Patterson of Bailey, NC, and Melissa Wilkins and husband Will of Virginia Beach, VA. Five grandsons; Michael Wilkins, Cpl David Klutts of the USMC and wife Amanda, Jonathan Wilkins, Alan Smith-Beaver, Tyler Wilkins, and one granddaughter Dana Klutts. Two sisters; Iula Starr of Elizabethtown, NC, Lura Phelps of Wilmington, NC. Eight brothers; Reuben Smith of Autryville, NC, Earl Smith of Durham, NC, Chester Smith of Roseboro, NC, Lester Smith of Roseboro, NC, Edom Smith of Lexington, NC, Joe Smith of Roseboro, NC, Jack Smith of Roseboro, NC, Hurley Smith of Roseboro, NC and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded by his parents; Sidney and Gertrude Smith and two sisters; Christine Smith Bledsoe and Linda Smith Johnson.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Deaf Missionary Church in Norfolk by Pastor Dan Dowdy. The family will receive friends and family from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Altmeyer Funeral Home Southside chapel.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Mission Fund of Deaf Missionary Church.

i am very sorry for your loss. my heart goes out to your family.

i don’t know why this memory stands out but one night while john and i were over,your dad was there too. well at one point i needed the lighter and john had it so i called him and held up my hand as if i were flicking the lighter and he handed me the lighter. later your dad seemed amused at that and asked how i came to use that gesture for “lighter”. that memory comes to me quite often actually and it always makes me smile.

Uncle Wiley and Aunt Louise were both so special to us. We will miss you. Our love and prayers go out to the girls and their families. We will continue to keep you in our prayers. We love you all.
