Walter V. Kulpa, 82, of Wheeling, WV, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, in Belmont Manor, St. Clairsville, Ohio.
He was born Oct. 22, 1920, in Wheeling, son of the late Joseph and Mary Ogrodnik Kulpa.
He was retired supervisor from Wheeling Post Office; a member of the former St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, South Wheeling; an Army veteran of World War II, where he served in Company C, 21st Infantry Battalion; he was Polish interpreter for General Patton; he was honored by the Jewish community for liberating concentration camps in World War II; his photos and historic records are in the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. and Pittsburgh, Pa.
He was a member of the Holy Name Society at the former St. Ladislaus Catholic Church; former president of St. Ladislaus Parish Council; he was active in St. Ladislaus school sports, serving as head basketball coach for 10 years and assistant football coach for the combined St. Ladislaus and St. Mary’s football teams; he was a member of the PAP Club; and he was an avid golfer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Theodore and Matthew Kulpa; two sisters, Helen Thomas and Mildred Kulpa.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda E. Zabek Kulpa; a son, Christopher J. Kulpa, and his wife, Sondra; two daughters, Lora Kociban and her husband, Andy, Kathy McGee and her husband, Mark, all of Wheeling; a brother, Louis Kulpa of Wheeling; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Friends received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Beiswenger Chapel, 3828 Jacob St., South Wheeling, with a 7 p.m. vigil service.
Funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Patrick Condron as celebrant. Entombment in Mount Calvary Mausoleum, Wheeling.
Memorial contributions may be made to General Post Fund 510, VA Pittsburgh Health Care System, 118 V-A, University Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15240, for the Aspenwall VA Nursing Home.
