Virginia Beach

Thomas Ralph Dunford, 62, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 13, 2008, after a short battle lost to melanoma cancer.

Tom was born, on December 11, 1945, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, on a train bound for Norfolk, Virginia. He lived his entire life in the Tidewater Area. After graduating from Princess Anne High School in 1964, he joined the Naval Air Reserve in 1965 and attended Old Dominion University. Tom was employed by the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia in 1967 and retired from Verizon 34 years later in 2002. He was a member of the Country Club of Silver Springs Shores in Ocala, Florida where he and Wally spent most of their winters playing golf. While here in Virginia Beach, Cypress Point was his home where he was a member of the Country Club. Tom could be found almost any day somewhere with dear friend, Jim Marrion, and other Cypress friends playing golf. Tom will certainly be missed by many many friends who took much pleasure both in playing golf with Tom and beating him at the same time.

Tom is survived by his best friend, wife and soul mate “Wally” to whom he was married for 20 special years. His son John Dunford and wife Clare and their children Mack and Emily of Richmond, Virginia, his stepson Peter Rash and wife Susy and their children Aaron, McKenzie, and Logan of Moyock, North Carolina, his mother Ida Dunford of Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was predeceased by his father Jack Dunford and two brothers Bobby and Dan Dunford.

The family will receive friends Thursday, July 17, 2008, from 6 until 8 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home at 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 18, 2008, at 11:00AM at First Baptist Church of Virginia Beach, 35th Street and Holly Road, Virginia Beach by the Reverend Bobby Jones. A reception will follow at Cypress Point Country Club, 5340 Club Head Road, Virginia Beach. Memorial Donations may be made to the Norfolk SPCA and Personal Touch Homecare of Virginia. Dad, I will miss you more than you ever know. It seems like yesterday, when I was four and you cut down that persimmon-powerbuilt 3 wood for me, shagging golf balls at the Elizabeth Manor driving range, having you drop the flag right in the middle of my putting stroke, squeaking that gorilla head cover during one of my tee shots and you holing a bunker shot on 18 to beat me by 1 of course I three putted. I hope that one day we will meet again at a place that doesn’t require tee times and the fairways and greens look like Augusta. I will love you always!

Your Son,

Dear John,

My sincere sympathies to you and your family. The video is quite moving and paints a portrait of a man that loved life and must have had a great sense of humor. I now know where you get your humorous side and zest for life. Please give Claire, Mack and Emily a big hug for me and please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Wally,

We are so sorry to hear about Tom. He was a great golfer and it was always an honor to play or talk the game of golf with him. He will truly be missed by many at Cypress. God bless you and your family.

I did not know Tom Dunford but I do remember him being in my home room at Princess Anne. Our graduating class was over 1000 seniors and it saddens me that members of the class of 1964 are leaving us. My prayers are with his family and friends.

I was saddened to hear of Tommy’s passing, and my prayers go out to his family and friends. I had not seen Tommy since high school but always remembered him, separate from so many others of that time in life, as a genuine, fun-loving, sincere, and positive friend. I know he will be missed.

I truly am a better person for having known you. You are a true friend and someone that I will never forget. So many times during the course of a day I think of phrases you used often while playing golf or just hanging out. Little pearls of wisdom that helps me stay grounded and deal with both the good and bad that comes our way. I wish you peace and send my love your way.

Tom, we have shared many days on the course and it will be hard to replace you. I will always remember the smiley grin of yours no matter what the shot or score was, I will never forget the quack quack on 14. It was a great 20 years…

I worked for Tom for a number of years and he was by far one of the greatest. Always so calm, fair, just an all around good person. In fact, I was working for him when the two of you met. I am so glad ya’ll had those twenty good years together. I know there is nothing to ease your pain, but just remember all those good times. I am sure he will be greatly missed by all. God bless you thru all of this. The video was beautiful and quite moving. None of this makes any sense, but I guess there is a reason for everything.
