Sylvia S. Bayard, 93, died at Beth Shalom Home, Feb. 23, 2005. Mrs. Bayard was a native of New York and the daughter of the late David and Lena Mendes. Sylvia was a member of Beth El Temple and its sisterhood, Hadassah, B’Nai Brith Women, Hebrew Ladies Charity Society, Brith Shalom Lodge and Beth Shalom Home, an honorary member of Temple Israel and a tireless worker for all other Jewish charities. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred A. Bayard and her twin sister, Ruth Gralitzer. She is survived by her daughter, Jean Zicht of New York; two grandchildren, Miriam Wexler and husband Donald and Marion Tedesco; four great-grandchildren, Rachel and Brian Wexler, Joseph, Nicholas and Jason Tedesco; and her surrogate grandchildren, Scott Rosenblum and wife Ellen, Ruthmarie Behlman and husband Adam, Richard Rosenblum and wife Gabi, Suzi Guardia and husband Luis and Michael Rosenblum and wife Nicole. Sylvia was a kind and generous woman who gave of her self to her community. The family would like to acknowledge the nursing staff of Beth Shalom Home and a special thank you to her caregiver, Ella Jones, who loved Sylvia as if she were her own mother. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday by Rabbi Arthur Ruberg and Cantor Jacob Tessler at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach chapel, is handling arrangements. Friends will be received at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jordan Rosenblum, 3184 Silver Sands Circle, Virginia Beach, No. 301, following the service on Friday.
