PAYNE, Sydney B., 81, of Wheeling, WV, died Friday, January 30, 2015 in Liza’s Place.
He was born June 25, 1933 in Bluefield, WV, a son of the late Cabel M. and Alice J. Breen Payne.
Syd was a graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School and raised at the St. John’s Home by the loving Sisters of Mount St. Joseph, a former member of the Teamsters, a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Wheeling, and an Army veteran.
He was a truck driver, and during his later years, was a dedicated newspaper carrier to his friends at Brookpark Place and Welty Home.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michelle Payne, two brothers, Charles Jeanie Payne and Cabel Joyce Payne, two sisters, Judy Bowlings and Phyllis Wolf.
Surviving is his loving wife, Lillian K. Grob Payne, five sons, Bryan Terry Ann Payne, Rick Lori Payne, Terry Kathy Payne, Jimmy Effie Payne, all of Wheeling; Syd Jodi Payne of Martinsburg, WV; 11 grandchildren, Aubrey Jon West, Danielle RJ Vavrock, Joe Payne, Lauren Payne, Gabrielle Payne, Kyleigh Payne, Shelby Payne, Phillip Payne, Adam Payne, Chloe Payne and Ryan Payne, several nieces and nephews.
Friends received 2-8 p.m. Monday at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, where Vigil services will be held at 7:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Wheeling.
Interment with military honors in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s Home for Children, St. Michael Parish School, and Liza’s Place.
