I just read the WJU notice about Steve and wanted you to know that I have been thinking of you and will keep all of you especially in my prayers. I will remember Steve and all your family at Mass here in Baltimore with our senior Jesuits. I always enjoyed hearing Steve’s singing at our summer liturgies at the WJU Chapel and appreciated your family helping with music.

DEAR RICH AND KIM, OUR HEARTS GO OUT TO YOU. HERE ARE SOME WORDS THAT MIGHT MAKE SENSE I’M FREE

DON’T GREIVE FOR ME, FOR NOW I’M FREE.

I’M FOLLOWING THE PATH GOD LAID FOR ME.

I TOOK GOD’S HAND WHEN I HEARD THE CALL;

I TURNED MY BACK AND LEFT IT ALL.

I COULD NOT STAY ANOTHER DAY

TO LAUGH, TO LOVE, TO WORK OR PLAY.

TASKS LEFT UNDONE MUST STAY THAT WAY,

I FOUND THAT PLACE AT THE CLOSE OF DAY.

IF MY PARTING HAS LEFT A VOID,

THEN FILL IT WITH REMEMBERED JOY.

A FRIENDSHIP SHARED, A LAUGH, A KISS.

AH YES, THESE THINGS, I TOO , WILL MISS.

BE NOT BURDENED WITH TIMES OF SORROW,

I WISH YOU SUNSHINE OF TOMARROW.

MY LIFE’S BEEN FULL, I SAVORED MUCH,

GOOD FRIENDS, GOOD TIMES, A LOVED ONE’S TOUCH

PERHAPS MY TIME SEEMED ALL TOO BRIEF;

DON’T LENGHTEN IT NOW WITH UNDUE GRIEF.

LIFT UP YOUR HEART AND SHARE WITH ME-

GOD WANTED ME NOW, GOD SET ME FREE.

Kim & Richard,

Seven years ago, in my first year with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, I stood in the studios at WTRF completely overwhelmed by this phenomenon called the Telethon, and really wondered if I was going to make it thru the next few days. People kept telling me..”Have you met the Carter’s yet? Once they get here you’ll calm down. It’ll be fine”. I truly had no idea what that meant, or how it was going to make the feeling of me throwing up go away. But then, a few hours into a very long day, the Carter’s showed up. Smiles everywhere, and sunshine all around you all, it all came together. Steve gave me a small lecture about how it would be nice if an MDA rep stuck around for more than a year, and told me I’d never remember everyone’s names today, but to just keep smiling, and somehow 21.5 hours won’t seem so long. It might seem so insignificant, but I’ll never forget that moment, and how for me personally, the Carter’s saved the day.

As a family, you fought the disease gracefully. My prayers for you and your family, MD losses are so hard to swallow.

Steve began my class about 10 years ago when I first came to WJU. He was very brave but also realistic. This campus was too big a barrier. I was always happy to see him on campus to assist with campus ministry music, though. I really appreciated his smile, his courage and his beautiful voice. He will be missed. My prayers and love to him, his family and friends. We grieve, but he is free and in the arms of the One who shared him with us.

Love, Bev

Steve was an extraordinary example of strength and humility. Reflecting on the last few days I realized that Steve passed away on the same date as Saint Faustina. She is widely known for her image of Christ with the inscription Jesus, I trust in you. Steve was able to live those words his entire life. May we learn from Steve’s example and honor him with the simple prayer Jesus, I trust in you. Rest in peace my friend.
