Stephen Howard Cornwell

After courageously battling a serious heart disease for over 25 years, Stephen Steve Howard Cornwell died suddenly at his home in Virginia Beach on 21 April. Steve had approached his health care with such optimism and high spirits that his sudden departure was a severe shock.

Steve was born on 10 April 1950 in Washington D.C. to Warren Harker Cornwell and Kate Clawson Cornwell. As his parents worked with the United Nations, Steve spent his youth overseas: Ecuador, Jamaica, Colombia, Turkey, Panama and the Philippines. He obtained his B.A. from Lynchburg College and his M.P.A. from Old Dominion.
Steve was devoted to his profession in health services and worked for the State of Virginia for 25 years as an epidemiologist and health counsellor. After his medical retirement from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Health, Steve continued to be active in health care issues. He gave his time freely and unstintingly. He was serving as President of Virginia Beach Chapter of Mended Hearts at the time of his death. Throughout his working life and his time as a volunteer, Steve was known as a cheerful, happy and helpful colleague. His laugh was contagious, which helped reduce the difficult tensions often found in his line of work.
An avid sportsman, Steve loved swimming, running and cycling. For years he was a regular participant in marathons and triathlons. Even after his heart disease forced him to slow down, he kept in shape with gym workouts and long walks with his dogs, which were renown in the neighbourhood.

His greatest love was his family. He admired and was never short of praise for the achievements of his wife and his children. He is survived by his wife, Corinne Wolfe-Cornwell; four children and a grandson: Andrew from a first marriage to Maureen Reed his wife Melody and their son Reed Stephen, from Cincinnati; and Robert, Courtney and Ashley also from Virginia Beach. Other survivors include his older siblings, Charles from La Jolla, California and Sally, from Geneva, Switzerland; and his nephew, Charles and his wife Patricia from Garrison, New York, and niece, Kristine Miller and her two sons Aaron and Russell, from Milford, Conn.

Steve will be remembered for his exceptional good nature, his sense of humour, his generosity, his love for his family, his devotion to his profession, and his attentive care of his dogs. His premature departure has created an immeasurable emptiness in the family; he will continue to be loved tenderly and will be sorely missed.

A memorial service celebration of Steve’s life will be held Friday, April 25th at 6:00 at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Rd. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Heart Association. Condolences may be offered to the family online at

Corinne and Family,

From the political jokes between Steve and Van, to the time Steve hid Robert’s car at our house; from him joking that I wasn’t his sister, Sally, when I called, to the day Steve became White Fang’s new dad…not to mention his calls making sure that Pizazz was your favorite store for those special occasions, we couldn’t help but treasure his friendship.

He is forever in our hearts and you are forever in our prayers.

We love you,

Van and Sally

Corrine and Family,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Although I haven’t seen Steve in over a year, the thought of him always put a smile on my face. His laughter was contagious and he always seemed to find humor in life’s challenges. I will always cherish the many adventures we experienced together and stories he shared of his years working in public health. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Dear cornwell family.

I knew Steve from Tidewater Cardiovascular Institute. My office was next to mended hearts. I used to crack up laughing everytime I heard steve laugh….. then he would come into my office wondering what was so funny so he could laugh along with me. I thought so highly of steve. He talked about his family all the time. What a wonderful man he was, he will truly be missed. We will treasure his memories.

Dear Corrine and Family,

We are deeply saddened at the news of Steve’s sudden passing. Steve was a big man with a big heart. At Tai Chi class he frequently wore his JMU Dad shirt. When he spoke of his family, as he did often during breaktime, he was always so proud. We will greatly miss his jokes and jovial energy. If it would bring you any comfort Corrine, we would love to have you come to class again. There are more women now participating and all levels! Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this sad time.

I live directly across the street from the neighborhood “dog” park and have had the pleasure of getting to know Steve over the years while he walked the four legged family members rain or shine. Whether a 10 second hello or a five minute chat about pets, kids or the neighborhood Steve always stopped to say hello and share a brief chuckle. His smile and laughter were truly contagious and he will be missed by many. Please accept our condolences during this time and know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I was fortunate to have been one of Steve’s cardiac rehab nurses. He was an inspiration to all of us. He was unbelievably positive about his recovery and living life to the fullest. His family was his motivation and his love. He will be missed not only by his family, friends, but our community.

My thoughts and prayers are with Steve’s family. I am a new member of Mended Hearts and only met Steve once. When I met him he went out of his way to introduce himself to me, and introduce me to the group. I would have liked to have gotten to know him better. I know he will be missed. Todd Holt

Robert, Ashley and Courtney,

I’ll never forget Mr. Cornwell playing Santa during our elementary years…even though I thought he was the real Santa at the time : How many chance encounters have our families had when we went out to dinner?? My evenings always brightened when I would see your parents walk through the door.

Your dad was someone that everyone could get along with, and I always appreciated that, its a rare gift.

I want all three of you to know that I’m here if you ever need anything, whether its just to talk, or if you need a favor done. Your mom is so blessed to have you, your family is so strong! You’re in my prayers and thoughts, always.
