Stephen A.”Whitey” Magyar, 73, of 6 Wegee Lane,
Shadyside, Ohio, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001 at his home. He was born June 15, 1927 in Hartshorne,
Oklahoma, a son of the late Louis Magyar and Anna
Gulash Magyar Kroll.
He was a retired math teacher and coach at Shadyside High School having served 39 years. He was a 1945 graduate of Shadyside High School and graduate of West Liberty State College. He received his masters degree from West Virginia
University and was a Bethany College Math Science
Foundation Scholar.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Shadyside; the Shadyside Alumni Association;past
Exalted Ruler of Bellaire Elks, Shadyside American Legion Post 521 and the Shadyside Booster Club. He was a Navy veteran serving in World War II.
He was an Ohio All-State football player; played for four years at West Liberty State College and played in the Smokey Mountain Bowl Game; inducted into the West Liberty State College Hall of Fame;
was an assistant football coach at WLSC for two years’ and was a member of the West Liberty Silver
Bears Alumni Association.
He coached and won in the 1955 Ohio-WV All Star Game; coached three undefeated Shadyside football teams in the seasons of 1954, ’73, and ’77. He was named Eastern District Coach of the year in 1977; a member of the Shadyside High School Hall of Fame; and an honorary member of the National Honor Society. He received the Upper Ohio Valley
Dapper Dan Achievement Award in 1977 for coaching Shadyside to the OVAC AA Championship.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, George Kroll, Sr.; four
brothers, John, Joseph, Michael, and George Magyar; and his brother-in-law, Dr. John W. Thomas.
Surviving are his wife, Nellie Thomas Magyar; a son, Stephen T. and his wife, Robyn of Shadyside,
two daughter, Pamela Magyar Torlone of Shadyside
and Stephanie Magyar Imhoff and her husband, Keith
of New Albany, Ohio; a brother, Louis Magyar of Shadyside; and a sister, Theresa Kocheran and her husband Steven of Oceanside, California; nine grandchildren, Mark Torlone of Shadyside, Sarah and Grace Imhoff both of New Albany, Jessica Magyar of Columbus, Adam Magyar of Shadyside, and
Meredith, Caroline, Stephen and Matthew Magyar of
Shadyside.
Friends will be received on Friday from 2-9 PM at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Home, 3900 Central
Avenue, Shadyside. Funeral liturgy with Mass will
be celebrated on Saturday at 10 AM in St. Mary’s
Catholic Church with the Father Frank C. Cronin as
celebrant. Interment in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling. A Vigil service will be held on Friday at 3 PM at the funeral home.
