Sister Ursula Marie Mary Leo Wethington, CSJ
Sister Ursula Marie Mary Leo Wethington, daughter of the late Leo A. and Mary Rose Murphy
Wethington, died at Mount St. Joseph on Tuesday, February 10, 2015. She was born August
3, 1918, at Browns Valley near Owensboro, Kentucky.
When she was nine, her family moved to Huntington, West Virginia, where she attended St.
Joseph Grade and High Schools. After graduation, she worked in an insurance office for eight
years. After much prayer and discernment, she entered the Congregation of St. Joseph in
Wheeling on September 8, 1945. Upon reception into the novitiate, she received a new name
in religion, Sister Mary Leo. She made temporary profession of vows in 1946 and final
profession of vows on March 19, 1951. She received a B.S. Ed. degree from Duquesne
University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
As a teacher, she served in several diocesan schools: St. Mary and St. James Schools in
Clarksburg
I send my deepest condolences to Sister Mary Leo’s immediate family and her family at Mount St. Joseph. As a 1969 graduate of St. Joseph Cathedral in Wheeling Sister instilled in me a love for music especially music from the “Sound of Music.” She was a teacher who had her students best interest at heart and I am indebted to her. I am sure she will still be watching out for her former students from her balcony seat among the saints. I apologize for not being in attendance.
So sad to hear of the passing of Sister Mary Leo, as I knew her. She was a life long friend and spiritual mentor. She had a great sense of humor and very deep wisdom about many things. She also spoke of her family often, and with great affection. God Bless Sister Mary Leo and all the sister’s of St. Joseph. Ann Wolfe Alvaro

So very sorry to hear of the passing of one of my favorite teachers from St. Mary’s Grade School in Clarksburg, WV. Sister Mary Leo will be missed. To find out that we were one of her favorite classes is unbelievable considering all of the junior-high grief we gave her! Still a teacher that I have many fond memories of. Rest in peace Sister.
Sr. Mary Leo was my all time favorite teacher at Sacred Heart and beyond. I will be forever grateful for the impact she had on my life so many years ago.
