Sister Rita Lawley, a Sister of Saint Joseph, died at Mount Saint Joseph on Tuesday, January 13, 2004. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Maurice and Rose Quinn Lawley, on October 31, 1915.
Sister Rita received her early education at Our Lady of Holy Souls Grade and High Schools. On January 6, 1941, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, receiving the name of Sister Grace Madeleine. Later she chose to be known by her baptismal name, Sister Rita. She graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, receiving a degree in Social Studies and English. She also studied art at several schools.
Sister Rita ministered as an educator in schools throughout the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston: St. Joseph’s Academy, St. Mary’s Sacred Heart and Central Catholic High School in Wheeling; St. Mary’s and Notre Dame High School in Clarksburg; St. Joseph in Huntington; St. Patrick in Weston; St. Francis Borgia in Grasselli; St. Francis de Sales in Beckley; St. Agnes in Charleston; and Bishop Donahue in McMechen.
Professionally, Sister Rita was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and attended workshops at West Virginia University. Following her years of teaching, Sister Rita was receptionist at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Wheeling. From 1983 to 1985 she was a member of the pastoral team at St. Theresa Parish in Morgantown. Later she served as a volunteer at Wheeling Hospital and Mount Saint Joseph.
Sister Rita is survived by a cousin, Mrs. Theresa Culver of Brigantine, New Jersey; friends and associates.
Family and friends will be received from 1:30 – 9:00 p.m. on Friday, January 16, in the Mount Saint Joseph Chapel, Wheeling, wherea 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service will be held. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, at Mount Saint Joseph, with the Rev. Walter Buckius, SJ, as celebrant. Interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery in the Sisters of St. Joseph section.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wheeling Foundation, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, WV 26003. Funeral arrangements are by Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling.
