She was looking forward to celebrating her hundredth birthday later this year. She was born in Grafton, WV on Nov. 6, 1903, the daughter of the late James and Julia Goodling Freeman. In June of 1922, she graduated from St. Augustine’s High School in Grafton and a year later entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on August 15. Sister Mary Grace continued her education in Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, where she received an A.B. in Latin and Social Studies. Former students will remember her from her many years of teaching at St. Joseph’s Academy and Central Catholic High School in Wheeling. She also taught at St. Peter’s, Fairmont, St. Patrick’s Weston and Corpus Christi, Warwood. Even during her retirement years at Mount St. Joseph, she continued to tutor students in reading. Sister Mary Grace served her congregation as Director of Novices from 1940-1961 and is fondly remembered by those members of the Sisters of St. Joseph whose lives were touched by her guidance and direction.
