Sister Mary Carney, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, died at Mount Saint Joseph on Wednesday, September 17, 2003. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Agnes Kilker Carney of Weston, West Virginia. She was born July 13, 1917 and graduated from St. Patrick’s High School. Following her graduation from St. Mary’s School of Nursing, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on October 7, 1939. Sister Mary did graduate study at the Catholic University in Washington, DC, at St. Louis University, and the university Medical Center in Indianapolis, where she received certification in Coronary Care Nursing. She served as Administrator of St. Francis Hospital, Charleston and St. Mary’s Hospital in Clarksburg. Sister Mary was Supervisor of the Coronary Care and Crisis Intervention Nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital until her retirement. Sister Mary was the author of articles in Hospital Progress, the Catholic Hospital Journal, St. Louis. She maintained membership in the National League for Nursing, the American College of Hospital Administrators, and was a member of the Administrative Committee of the West Virginia Hospital Association. Sister Mary was preceded in death by two brothers: James F. Carney and Robert E. Carney. She is survived by her brothers, John K. Carney of Springfield, Virginia, William E. Alfred of Weston, West Virginia, a sister-in-law, Ellen Carney of Walnut Creek, CA, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and colleagues among the medical profession in areas where she served. Family and friends will be received from 1:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19 2003, at Mount Saint Joseph, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, where a Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2003, in Mount Saint Joseph chapel with the Rev. Walter Buckius, SJ, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Wheeling Foundation. 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, WW 26003.
