Sister Mary Eleanor Grottendieck, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, died at Mount St. Joseph Convent on Monday, February 26, 2001. She was 89 years of age.

Sister Eleanor was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of Charles and Nora R Grottendieck. She attended St. Peter’s Grade School, Fairmont, WV and graduated from St. Peter’s High School in 1932. After entering the Sisters of St. Joseph in June 1932, she attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and graduated with a B. Ed. in elementary education.

Sister Eleanor was in charge of the Altar Bread Department for the congregation from 1935-1945 before she began her teaching career. She is especially remembered by former students, parents, and friends in Benwood, where she taught at St. John’s School for 19 years. Other school assignments were St. Mary’s, St. Vincent de Paul, and Blessed Trinity, all in the Wheeling area, St. Joseph’s in Huntington, St. Francis Xavier in Moundsville, and St. Mary’s in Clarksburg. She retired from teaching in 1983.

Sister Eleanor is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Mrs. Rose Ann Hawkinberry, a niece who lives in Fairmont, and Mrs. Eleanor Johnson, a niece who lives in Baltimore. Two of her cousins, Sisters Martina and Marjean Staud who reside at Mount St. Joseph, are also Sisters of St. Joseph.

Family and friends will be received from 1:30 – 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27 2001, at Mount St. Joseph, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, WV, where Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2001, in the Mount St. Joseph Chapel with the Rev. Mark Carter OFM, Cap. as celebrant. Interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery in the Sisters of St. Joseph section.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wheeling Foundation, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, WV. Arrangements by Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, WV.
