Sister Katherine Shreve, SSJ, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wheeling, died at Mount Saint Joseph on Monday, October 7, 2002. She is widely known to friends and associates throughout the state through her various ministries and relationships in parishes, college and schools. Sister Katherine was born Feb. 24, 1943 in Fairmont, WV, the daughter of the late Neil H. and Jane Frances Kennedy Shreve. As a member of St. Peter’s Parish, she attended St. Peter’s Grade School and graduated from St. Peter’s High School in 1961. After completing the program at St. Mary’s Hospital School for Nursing in Clarksburg, WV, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wheeling on Aug. 13, 1964. As a member of the congregation, sister Katherine continued her studies and received an A.B. degree from West Liberty State College and an M.S. in Pastoral Ministry at Boston College. She studied theology at Wheeling Jesuit University and was involved in a Summer Study Seminar in Europe in 1969. Sister Kit, as she is known to family, friends and close associates, served as a staff nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital, Clarksburg. She was also involved in primary education at St. Vincent’s School and child care at St. Vincent’s Home, both in Wheeling. Since 1978 she has been involved in pastoral work throughout West Virginia as a campus chaplain at West Libert State College, as Pastoral Associate at St. Brendan’s Parish in Elkins and at the Church of the Ascension in Hurricane. Until the time of her illness, she was Pastoral Associate at St. Peter Claver Parish in Huntington. She participated in numerous civic groups and congregational committees. Sister Kit is survived by three sisters: Sharon Klees and her husband Gregory of Hyattsville, MD; Marilyn Boudreau and her husband Richard of Florissant, MO; and Dianne Smith of Charleston, WV; a brother: David Shreve and his wife Rita of Point Marion, PA; aunts: Mary Catherine Ford, Eugene, OR; and Edith Dotts, Fairmont, WV; an uncle: William Miller of Frederick, MD; as well as several nieces, nephews and countless friends. Family and friends will be received from 1:30- 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, in the Mount St. Joseph Chapel, Wheeling, where a 7:00 p.m. vigil service will be held. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 10, at Mount St. Joseph with the Rev. James O’Brien, SJ, as celebrant. Interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Sisters of St. Joseph section. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wheeling Foundation, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, WV 26003.

Sister Kit was a special mentor to me while I was a student at Bethany College. She was serving as a chaplain at West Liberty State College at this time,
