Sister JoAnn Dawson, SSJ, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of
Wheeling, died at Mount Saint Joseph on Thursday, October 17, 2002. Sister JoAnn was born November 29, 1923, in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of the late Marvin and Ruth Chilcote Dawson. She attended Holy Family Grade and High Schools and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 9, 1940. She attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sister JoAnn spent twenty years as an educator throughout the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston in St. Francis Xavier in Moundsville; Cathedral Grade in Wheeling; St. Joseph Grade School in Huntington; Corpus Christi in Warwood; St. James Grade School in Clarksburg; St. Vincent de Paul Grade School in Elm Grove; and St. Anne’s School in Bristol, Virginia. Following her retirement in 1961, Sister JoAnn Served as a receptionist at Mount St. Joseph. She was also a member of the Seeing and Hand Association of Wheeling. She is survived by three sisters: Marvine Waite of Lorain, OH; Laura Roddy of Springfield, Ohio; and Pauline Merklin of New Albany, Ohio. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and many friends. In addition to her parents, Sister JoAnn was preceded in death by her brothers, Marvin and Robert. Family and friends will be received from 1:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, October 21, 2002, in the Mount Saint Joseph Chapel, where a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service will be held. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m on Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at Mount Saint Joseph with Rev. Eugene Ostrowski as celebrant. Interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, in the Sisters of St. Joseph section. Memorial conttibutions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wheelng Foundation, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, WV 26003.
