After many years of teaching at the

same school with Shirley, it saddens

me to know that she no longer is

here with her family and friends. The memories remain with all who

knew her.

In 1988 I had the pleasure of meeting Shirley Harley. She was my 5th grade teacher. My memories of that year are the fondest of my years in grade school, because she was an exceptional teacher. With her passing, Virginia Beach schools have lost an incredible lady, but what remains are a lifetime of students who will forever cherish her in their memory. May God truly bless her family.

Shirley and I worked together at Arrowhead. She was a superb teacher and a special friend. I will be out of town for the services; however, my thoughts are with all of you. Remember, “More precious than the gold of kings, are memories of the happy things.”

Shirley was a wonderful person and a great friend. She was VBEA secretary when I was president. I appreciated her candor, advice and her sense of humor. As teacher leaders, we traveled to meetings across the country. After a long day of meetings, Shirley was always ready for an evening of fun. And we had some great times. Shirley was the kind of friend you could always depend on. Like my cousin Linda, who was also Shirley’s friend and who died last spring, Shirley is gone too soon. Shirley will always have a special place in my heart.

To my family: I am very sorry for the pain you all must be suffering, knowing I know what it feels like to lose a parent. Although I was much younger then, I still today feel as though it was yesterday and I can sympathize with your lost. I remember Aunt Shirley being such a unique and lively person and always making me smile. I have great memories of her. May you all be strong through this tough time and may god be with you all.
