Sally Kirkland Simmons went home to be with the Lord she loved and to be reunited with her dear husband on Saturday May 1, 2010.

A native of Humboldt Tennessee, she was the daughter of Loren Newman Kirkland and Mattie Tuggle Kirkland. She was the youngest of four brothers and two sisters. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Norfolk where she served her beloved Conqueror’s Class for more than 40 years.

She was a light to her family, her church and her neighbors shining and reaching out to them from her residence since moving there in 1964. Her passions were simple; her God, her family, her church, her neighbors, and her beautiful yard. She was a feisty card player, and a master crossword puzzle solver. As a member of the greatest generation, her values were service based and selfless in spirit and actions.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 55 years, Fred T. Simmons. She is survived by her adoring son Tom and his family, wife, Nanci, and daughters, Danielle and Annalie Simmons of Midlothian, Virginia; and her brother, Newman Kirkland of Lakeland, Florida.

Her prayer was “Lord, may my life help others it touches on the way”. It certainly did. He shined brightly through the window of her life.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at 3:00PM at First Baptist Church of Norfolk with Rev. Dick Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends Monday, May 3, 2010 from 6 – 8 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Rd., Virginia Beach. Condolences may also be made by visiting altmeyer.com.

Dear Tom & Nanci – I’m so sorry about your mom. I know these are rough days and so unexpected for you and your girls. I will be praying the Lord will wrap His great arms of love around you and send you the strength only He can give. Your mom was very dear to our family and we enjoyed so much the time we spent together riding back and forth to the base. Mom was remembering today how during the blizzard of 1980, your mom dressed my dad in all of Fred’s winter clothes & boots so he could walk home after he drove her home. Those were special times. I bet she, your Dad, and my Daddy are sitting around telling stories about Ruth Brown RIGHT now!

Tom and Nanci- You have been in our thoughts and prayers every day this past week. I was so sorry I was unable to attend the celebration of Aunt Sally’s life. She was a special lady who touched so many people with her smile, her graciousness and her love for our Lord. We were all blessed by her kindness, warmth and joy for life. We treasure the memories of happy times we shared through the years. Our love and prayers are with you.

Tom,

You have my deepest sympathy. Simply stated, your Mom was just the best! She obviously loved life, had such enthusiasm and a great laugh. Sally was so easy to love. She and your Dad hold a special place in my heart. I know you and your family will deeply miss her and I am so sorry.

Tom, Nanci and girls

We are so sorry we could not attend the service for your wonderful mom and our beloved Aunt. We share some of the same warm memories of family get togethers. Toni and I visited Aunt Sally just a few years ago and were so warmly received. She loved flowers and when she and your Dad came to Texas to visit us several years ago all the wild flowers were in bloom and she loved seeing them. We will forever hold her in our memories and thank God for letting us share just some of her life. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
