Russell Louis Ambrose, 74, of Virginia Beach died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, December 23, 2001.

Born in Nazareth, Pennsylvania to the late Frank and Mary Ambrose, he was a retired U.S. Navy Chief and served for 20 years. He participated in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Lebanon Crisis. After retiring from the Navy, he worked at his barbershop as a barber stylist and as a Notary Public. He was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church since 1959. As a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Matthews Council #10601, he held the state record for recruitment and was a Fourth Degree Knight in the M.J. O’Keefe Assembly #1162 of Norfolk. He was a lifetime member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 60, a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 4809, a member of the American Legion Post No. 327 and a lifetime member of the Tidewater Coin Club where he served as a past president, a past vice-president and was a current active member on the board of directors.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Daphne Ambrose; four children, Paul C. Ambrose, Donna Marie Thornton, Frank O. Ambrose, and Jacqueline Theresa Ambrose; grandson, Anthony James Thornton- all of Hampton Roads; sister, Viola Burley of Nazareth, Pennsylvania; his aunt, Rose Nicefaro and three uncles, Pat, Jimmy and Louis DeNardo- all of Bangor, Pennsylvania.

The visitation will be held in Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach Chapel on Friday, January 4, 2002 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm with a Chalice Ceremony to be conducted at 7:00pm. A Mass of the Resurrection Funeral Service will be celebrated on Saturday, January 5, 2002 at 10:00am in St. Matthews Catholic Church. Burial at sea with full Navy Honors will be at a later date.

Ambrose and I exchange different things when i needed something notarized I would always call Ambrose, when his granson or someone in his family needed a tow he would call me. The female tow truck driver and the only other person that he could find that made homemade canned peppers. Sure do miss you Ambrose

Dear Daphne and Family

We were sorry to hear that Russ passed away. I have always enjoyed seeing and talking to you both at the 10:15 Mass at Saint Matthew’s. I also will remember ushering the 10:15 Mass with Russ, he was a gentle and compassionate man. I will keeep you both in my prayers.
