Dear Cory,

Your friendship with Lauren brought you into our family, and we truly enjoyed the time you shared with us. This is a most difficult time for you, but know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. The kind of person you are tells me that the family surrounding you is special. I’m sure your grandfather is so proud of you.

I was blessed with two loving caring and supportive parents and for that I am forever grateful.

My Dad was my hero.

Dad never had a harsh word for anybody.

And Dad was always there when anything needed fixed.

He always had to be busy fixing something or creating a new wood project.

My Dad could build or fix anything.

I only hope to someday be half the man my Dad was.

Dad was a very quiet man.

He never bragged or even mentioned his many accomplishments.

Dad worked very hard all his life to give us antyhing our hearts desired.

If only he knew it was only his love that he gave so readily that we really needed.

Jesus was a carpenter so I know he and my Dad will have alot to talk about.

Because the master builder has now taken our master carpenter home.

I’m sorry it took so long to get my words out, but I was afraid…he was my grandfather and an admirable man. We didn’t agree on things, but I’m glad that he was there waiting …I never got my chance to say goodbye, and I felt pain for this dire loss. I never meant any harm to my family …I was just desperate. My memories of him still linger, and though it’s hard, I’ll be strong…for him. He taught me how to be that way.

Kathryn, Roxanne, Sandy & Ralph….

There were many special times growing up with all of you. From playing in the alley to shooting basketball in the yard, Barbie dolls and learning to ride bikes together. Later in years I learned if Roxanne could paint it, Rocco could build it! A truly amazing man. I feel blessd to have known him and will pray for all of you. In the last week with the loss of my own mother I have come to realize that memories are a great treasure, hold on to all you can. The video tribute you created is a wonderful one. May God bless and keep you all!

Your friend

The most wonderful man I’ve ever known has gone to be with God.

There will be silence in his workshop, where he enjoyed making beautiful things for all of us. He won’t be sitting on the porch chatting the day away with Mom or “checking things out” in the yard and around their home…..a beautiful home he and Mom built 48 years ago….no power tools…..just muscle and love. And our home was filled with love because of them.

We have been blessed with the best parents anyone could hope for. We were always surrounded by love, support, and laughter. They taught us through much love and patience to work hard, stand proud, be honest, laugh, love, and most of all, how a good, strong marriage should be. They had a great one for 59 years and created a lifetime of wonderful memories that we’ll all cherish forever.

Our Mom couldn’t have picked a better man to be her husband and our Dad and our children’s “Pap”. He was by her side for 59 years and they truly enjoyed life….together. My heart breaks to know she’s lost her best friend, sweet love and partner. But he’s here with us still….I know it. And the next time I try to “fix” something myself, he’ll be helping me, like he always did…..won’t ya, Dad?

He was always ready to lend a hand to us or anyone else that needed it. But he never wanted praise for all that he did. His talents were amazing and without end, but you never heard him brag. His proudest achievement was being the best husband, Dad and grandfather that a family could hope for.

He was a gentle, kind-hearted, generous, hardworking, loving man who’s most important thing in life was his family. And this family will forever miss his laughter, smiling face and gentle touch.

I love you Dad….and I’ll miss you forever and ever….

The saws had fallen silent today.

finished carving forms of art.

The wooden eagles had flown away.

Why don’t the eagles ever stay?

cedar wings are splitting apart.

The saws had fallen silent today.

Repair them while the butterflies pray.

regale their story from the start.

The wooden eagles had flown away.

The craftsman never had his say,

Never got to play his part.

The saws had fallen silent today.

Unwilling artist is in the way,

Stop the beating of his heart.

The wooden eagles had flown away.

They’re soaring over his coffin today,

Becoming blurry as they dart.

The saws had fallen silent today,

the wooden eagles had flown away.

Something I’d written some years later.

The world has many heroes who have won a world of fame.

Heroes who have given their all to win in life’s great game.

But of all the famous heroes that our changing world has had.

There’s not a one I look up to or admire more than my dad.

To me, my dad’s a hero, though he’d turn away from praise.

He’s heroic in his quiet strength and his gentle giving ways.

He may not make headlines.

You won’t see him on TV.

But I think my dad is everything a hero ought to be.

He always keeps his promises, on that I can depend.

He’s loyal to me, no matter what, and he’ll always be my friend.

So when I think of heroes and the great things that they’ve done, I feel the way that I’ve always felt- my dad’s the greatest one.
