SMITH, Robert W. “Buzzy” Jr., 85, of Benwood WV, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 27, 2008 surrounded by his children.
“Buzzy” was born in Benwood on June 24, 1922. One of eighteen children, he was the son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Conrad Smith. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents, were his wife, Rosalie Loftus Smith in 1984; a daughter, Susan Richards in March 2007; three grandsons, Johnny Giovengo, Michael Smith, and Griffin Stipetich; a brother, “Jimbo” Smith; six sisters, Mary Louise Greathouse, Betty Long, Theresa Risden, Jeannie Radcliffe, Paula Smith, and Patricia Smith.
He was a Catholic and a member of St. John Church, Benwood. He was a retired employee of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel, Benwood plant, where he worked for over 40 years.
“Buzzy” was a member of Blake Brothers Post 46 American Legion Benwood, Benwood Volunteer Fire Department, Cave Club, PAP Club, Iola Club, and the VFW. He was a former Benwood City Councilman.
He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Thomas Jefferson during WW II, operating a landing craft on the “first wave” at the Invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. He also was in the invasions of Sicily, Salerno, North Africa, Southern France, and Okinawa.
Surviving is a son, Michael W. Fran Smith of McMechen; three daughters, Judy Tom Giovengo, Robin Ron Stipetich, and Kelly Lionel Hampton and a son in law Thomas Richards all of Benwood; fourteen grandchildren, Shelly Davis, Robert Smith, Connie Griffith, Tommy, Jeff, Joe and Josh Giovengo, Eddie, Jimmy and Ryan Richards, Abby Stipetich, L.A., Lacey, and Lavonte Hampton; twenty three great grandchildren; four brothers, Alfred Smith, Mike Smith, John Paul Smith, Eddie Smith all of Benwood; six sisters, Margaret Merryman of Shadyside OH, Ellie McGill, Bertha Schrumpf, Patsy Taylor, Nancy Hawk and Sandy James all of Benwood; forty five nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 214 Marshall St. McMechen, on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 from 1 – 9 pm. American Legion services will be held at 7:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 am at St. John Catholic Church Benwood. Interment will follow at Mt Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Benwood’s Fourth Street Playground Fund, in care of Tom Giovengo, 408 Water St. Benwood WV. 26031

JUDY, MIKE, ROBIN, KELLY AND ALL FAMILY MEMBERS. WE SEND OUR SYMPATHY AND PRAYERS TO ALL, IN YOUR TIME OF SORROW. BUZZY WAS A DEAR FRIEND AND NEIGHBOR. I HAVE MANY GREAT MEMORIES OF HIM. I USED TO HELP HIM IN HIS GARAGE, WHENEVER HE WAS WORKING ON CARS IN THE EVENING. HE WILL BE MISSED BY ALL.
