Rev. Fred Bates Jr.

Chesapeake, VA – Rev. Fred Warren Bates, Jr., died October 14, 2011. Rev. Bates was born in Kentucky to the late Fred and Sybil Stack Bates. He was a veteran having served in the US Marine Corp. Rev. Bates was the former pastor of CAVA FWB Church in Virginia Beach where he served for 22 years and the former pastor of Bethany FWB Church in Norfolk where he served 11 years. He was a member of Great Bridge Free Will Baptist Church where he served as pastor to the seniors. He was predeceased by a son, Michael.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 50 years, Marie O. Bates; 4 children, Randy Bates, Sheree Parker and husband Tony, Rennie Bates and wife Stacy, and Sarai Fulcher and husband Michael; 2 sisters, Barbara Wilson and husband John, and Debbie Gaskins and husband Robbie; brother, William Bates and wife Zig; 16 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 929 Battlefield Blvd, S., Chesapeake, VA 23322 on Friday from 7:00 until 8:30 pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00am at Great Bridge Free Will Baptist Church, 700 Mt. Pleasant Rd., Chesapeake, VA 23322 with Rev. Billy Bevan, Sr. and Rev. Hal Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Moyock Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Great Bridge Christian Academy, 700 Mt. Pleasant Rd., Chesapeake, VA 23322. Marie and family, our hearts go out to you today! We can all rejoice that Fred is now in heaven and no longer suffering. We are so thankful for the senior citizen ministry Fred gave at Great Bridge Free Will Baptist Church. We loved to have him come by our homes and talk with us. His humor and caring made us all feel very special. God has called home a very faithful servant, and we are so much better for having known Fred. We shall all miss him.

We are so sorry to hear about Fred’s passing. Joy and I are currently in Florida and we will be unable to attend the funeral. Fred has been a great friend to me over the years. I will truly miss him. But in my mind we are playing a round of golf in Bishopsville, SC on our way to the Masters. That was a wonderful trip and I will always have my fond memories of our time together.
