Raymond Roy Smoker, 93, of Gloucester passed away Thursday, November 24, 2011 at his home.

Mr. Smoker was born October 10, 1918, in Pennsylvania, son of the late Daniel and Hilda Smoker. He was a member of the Providence Mennonite Church of Denbigh and the Whippoorwill Hunt Club. He was a biblical scholar and enjoyed teaching, hunting and woodworking. He was a retired carpenter.

Survivors include his loving wife of over 69 years, Margaret Grace King Smoker; five devoted children, Verda Bennett and her husband, Robert, Nancy Nelson and her husband, Joe, Norma Brenneman and her husband Charlie all of Newport News, Sanford Smoker and his wife, Karen of Gloucester and Marlin Smoker and his wife, Terri of Coatesville, Penn; thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers and a sister.

The family will receive friends Monday, 6:00p.m. until 8:00p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel, 12893 Jefferson Ave., Newport News. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, 11:00 a.m., at Providence Mennonite Church 13101 Warwick Blvd. Newport News with Rev. Carl Mericle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
