Paul H. Bischof Jr.
On December 27, 2003, Our Lord called His friend, Paul, home to rest.
He was born April 24, 1930, son of the late Paul H. Bischof Sr. and Elizabeth Kreusch Bischof in Wheeling. He was a graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School, class of 1948, and served in the United States Marine Corps from 1948 to 1952, a veteran of the Korean War.
Paul married his sweetheart, Dolores Dorie Mae Trischler Bischof, on May 15, 1954. They shared their love together raising six children for 38 years, until Nov. 30, 1992, when she passed away.
In addition to his beloved Dorie and his parents, Paul also was preceded in death by a sister, Jeannine Bischof.
Paul was a former employee of the Ogden News for forty-nine and a half years. While there, he served a six year apprenticeship as linotype machinist. Later he held the position of Maintenance Superintendent until he retired in Dec. 1993.
A member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish since 1959, Paul completed four years of Diaconate study at St. Joseph Seminary. He was ordained a Deacon on November 7, 1986, by Bishop Francis Shulte. Assigned to his home parish, Paul was very active in the diocese as well. Working with young people, he helped coordinate Teens Encounter Christ Retreats, as well as Christ Renews His Parish Retreats. He and Dorie were on a committee to design a young adult retreat, "Bread for the Journey."
While at St. Vincents, he served in several capacities in the following programs; Family Life, Living Your Faith, Spiritual Life Commission, RCIA, DeSales Adult Education, Evangelization, School Board, and Parish Council.
Paul will be remembered for his love of life, the jokes and stories he could tell in a special way, the homilies he shared which touched so many hearts, his generous spirit which he put forth in all that he did, and his many wood carvings which were shared with so many. In recent years, Paul combined his love of magic with inspirational stories at local libraries, schools, and organizations.
He is survived by the following: his dear friend and companion, Peggy Kerns Sullivan; his five daughters, Mrs. Karen Lamson Nguyen of Glen Dale, Mrs. Corrine Michael Stewart of Goldsboro, NC, Mrs. Debra Stanley Pawloski of Elm Grove, Mrs. Sheila L. David Smith of Bridgeport, Ohio, Mrs. Renee Steve Alkire of Williamstown, WV, and one son, Dr. Gary Karen Helmeke Bischof of Portage, Mich, and his special friends, Andi, Ryan and Rachael Sullivan. He leaves behind eleven grandchildren, Jason Nguyen and his fiance, Jody Spate, Jennifer Nguyen, Wesley Stewart, Lexi and Josh Pawloski, Elijah and Isaiah Smith, Zachary and Mikayla Alkire, and Amanda and Ella Bischof. He also will be missed by his brother Eugene Jeanne Bischof of Wheeling; a sister, Dr. Rita Meyer long-time friend, Jim of Indialantic, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 6-9 p.m. on Monday and from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday with the Vigil service at 7:45 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger St., Elm Grove. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. James LaCrosse S.M. as Celebrant. Interment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul School "Adopt a Student Program," 127 Key Ave., Wheeling, WV 26003 or to Valley Hospice, 98 East Cove Ave., Wheeling, WV 26003.

Dear Renee and family, I can’t believe your father is gone, it will leave such a void in all our lives, even those who didn’t see him often. His example of Christian living will always live on in the young people and all others that he touched. Terri and I are praying for your family, but know that Paul is with Dorie now and are comforted by that…Eleanor and Terri

Gary and family,

My mother informed me of your father’s death this weekend. I am sorry to hear of his passing. He was loved throughout the parish and was influential to many. I can tell you for certain that the example he set for living out Christ’s love was impressed upon me. He inspired my faith.

Celebrate his life these next few days and God bless you all.

I was so sorry to read of Paul’s passing. I have many fond memories of both of your parents from the TEC program in the early 80’s. I still have a cross he made me hanging in my home. My best to all of you!

Karen and Family, I was very sad to hear of your dad’s death. I will always have many fond memories of working with him at the newspaper. The thing I remember the most was that I always knew he was around even before I saw him and I told him many times that his pipe tobacco reminded me of cupcakes baking in the oven!

There simply aren’t enough words to express my most deepest and profound sympathy, and even if there were, they would be woefully inadequate.

May God grant him forever peace and happiness with our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Love,

Ellie Puskas

To Karen and family,

So sorry to hear of the loss of your father. I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing him, but from what I have read, he must have been very special. I remember the bible verse that says “…to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”—how AWESOME can that be?!! My prayers are with you and your family; that God will give you the strength that you need during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Jan and family

To the Family and Friends of Paul Bischof, I am truly saddened by your loss. I worked with Paul at the newspaper. My name was Jeanette Gregg at the time. Paul was a wonderful person, and it was a joy to know him and be around him.

Paul was greatly missed when he retired.

I must have missed his obituary in the paper or I would have been there to show my respect for paul and to share my condolences with his family.

I know serving the Lord meant a great deal to Paul. I remember one time going to see him preach in Elm Grove.

I just can’t say enough good things about Paul and the pleasure he gave everyone who knew him. The love of God showed abundtly through Paul.

I am truly sorry for your loss.

Sincerely,

Jeanette Desmond

TO: Paul’s children. I used to see Paul three times a week, M-W-F, when he came into the Y for his aquacise class. I worked there, right after my divorce, and he and Peggy were very supportive. I also met my present husband at the Y, and again, Paul helped me with relationship/wedding/family matters. I still cling onto his words of advice and will often go back to the poems/stories/and book that he and Peggy gave me for support. Your Dad was a big part of our wedding ceremony on New Years Eve six years ago, so, as Bill and I celebrate our marriage, we will also celebrate knowing your Father.
