SACCO, Oliver A., 85, of Elm Grove, WV, died Thursday, May 13, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital.
Born in Wheeling on January 10, 1919, Oliver was the son of the late Vincenzo and Gelsomina Palermo Sacco. He attended Wheeling Central Catholic and Wheeling High Schools and was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict. While serving in WWII, he was awarded the Bronze Star and for his combat injuries he received the Purple Heart.
Oliver was a retired agent with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Knights of Columbus Carroll Council 504, Italian American Club, BPOE Lodge 28, and the Sons of Italy, Bellaire Ohio. He served for many years on the City of Wheeling Recreation Board.
In addition to his parents, Oliver was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Orlando, Melvin and Warren Sacco and two sisters, Vera Hyde and Helen Watt.
Surviving are his wife, Antonette Rivizzino Sacco; two sons, Gary A. Sacco and his wife Amy of Wheeling and Vincent S. Sacco and his wife Marla of Leesburg VA.; two granddaughters, Abby Lynn Sacco of Wheeling and Lauren Elise Sacco of Leesburg VA.; two grandsons, Alexander A. Sacco of Wheeling and Vincent P. Sacco of Leesburg VA. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger Street, Elm Grove, Saturday 6-8 p.m. and Sunday 12-3 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Monday 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Elm Grove. Entombment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. Vigil services will be held at 7:45 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 3134 Guernsey Street, Bellaire OH 43906.
