Mildred, truly a member of our Greatest Generation, peacefully went to be with her Lord with family at her side on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008.
She was born in Benwood, W.Va. She married her great love, John “Johnny” English, on March 14, 1942, before he left for Europe to serve in the United States Army during World War II.
Mildred demonstrated her dedication to her country by accepting and completing a difficult and highly covert assignment in England during the early days of the war. She returned and settled in McMechen, W.Va., where she and John lived and raised their twin children.
Mildred retired in 1986 from a career with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad after over 35 years of service. She loved to read and was brilliant with a set of crochet needles and yarn. She lived life to the fullest. She was active in the First Church of God in McMechen until she moved to Arlington, Texas in 2000.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, John English; mother, Carrie Fisher Davis; and father Hugh Davis.
Surviving are her son, Richard English and his wife, Christy, of Proctorville, Ohio; a daughter, Dorothy English and her loving partner, Sarah Britt-Bush, of Arlington, Texas; and her four beautiful grandchildren, Jeremy Slusser of Ohio, Lindsey Slusser of Kentucky, and Ian and James Isaac English of Ohio.
The family gives great thanks to Dr. Karel Dicke, Silvia Hanks, and the staff at the Arlington Cancer Center for their service, support, and friendship.
Friends will be received from noon until time of Memorial Service at 1 pm, Friday, February 1, 2008 at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 214 Marshall Street, McMechen, WV 26040. Inurnment in Mt. Rose Cemetery, Moundsville, WV.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Trinity Hospice of Fort Worth, 6850 Manhattan Blvd., Fort Worth, Texas 76120.

Dear Dot and Dick,

I was very sad to read about Millie’s passing in today’s paper.

I remember her fondly and will always remember her smile which was ever present.

Millie and I had a lot of Dutchmaid parties together. I don’t know if you all remember those but they were clothing parties at her home and I demonstrated them for her. She was a great lady and I will miss her.
