Melvin Samuel “Mel” Schnegg died Tuesday, January 24, 2012, of complications caused by Alzheimer’s Disease.
Born in Powhatan, Ohio, of Martha Elizabeth Bigler and Elbert Wesley Schnegg, Mel was one of four children. Mel had suffered from heart disease since approximately 1992 and from Alzheimer’s since around 2002.
After serving in World War II in the 38th Signal Construction Battalion also known as the 38th Signal Corps, Mel returned and married Marie Warner. After a brief stay in Cleveland, they decided they like small-town living better and moved to Shadyside, where they adopted two children.
Mel was employed by IBM during his entire career, during which he installed and serviced business machines for numerous companies in the area. During many of those years, Mel was also a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church and taught at bible school. After retiring form IBM, and still desiring to serve, Mel worked as a teaching assistant in the Shadyside School System until illness forced him to retire completely.
Mel’s two great loves in life were God and gardening. Until recently, he maintained an active church life; and he could always be seen in the back yard mowing, pruning, and tending to his fruit trees and vegetable plants.
Mel was preceded in death by one brother Paul Schnegg and one sister Evelyln Brunner.
Mel is survived by his wife, Marie, who resides in Shadyside, Ohio; his sister, Ila Darrah, of Powhatan Point, Ohio; his son, Mark, and Mark’s wife, Wendy, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his daughter, Susan Crooks, and Susan’s husband, Carl, of Franklin, Louisiana; and his grandson, Jonathan Schnegg, of Framingham, Massachusetts.
Services will be held at the Lincoln Avenue United Methodist Church, 3838 Lincoln Avenue, Shadyside, Ohio, on Monday, January 30, at 11:00 a.m.; followed by burial at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 51736 German Ridge Road, Powhatan Point, Ohio, immediately following. There will be a reception for family and friends provided by the Lincoln Avenue United Methodist Church Women’s Group at the church at 3:30 p.m. that afternoon.
Pre-funeral viewings will be held at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Home, 3900 Central Avenue, Shadyside, Ohio, on Sunday, January 29, between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. and between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.
Full military honors will be conducted by the Amerian Legion at 3:30 pm at the funeral home.
