WAKIM, Melo J. “Shoes”, 84, of Wheeling, died Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in Wheeling Hospital.

Melo was born December 24, 1925 in Wheeling, a son of the late John George and Edna Nagem Wakim. He was a member of St. Michael Parish, Wheeling; the Elm Grove Eagles; the Elm Grove Civics Association; the Cave Club, Wheeling; a lifelong member of the V.F.W. Post No. 4442, Wheeling; and was one of the original members of Speidel Golf Club. In addition, he was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served on the USS Tennessee during World War II.

Melo was well known by three generations of customers throughout the Ohio Valley. It is rare to find anyone in the last sixty years who had not purchased shoes, socks or novelty items from him, or played golf or shot a game a pool with him. He loved his family, his friends, his town, and his country. He will be missed by all.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom and Joe Wakim; and a sister, Marie Wakim.

Melo is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Laura M. Zepeda Wakim; four sons, John M. Wakim of Wheeling, Chris Wakim and his wife, Jeannette of Wheeling, Milo D. Wakim of Harrisburg, Pa., and Stephen P. Wakim of Wheeling; three sisters, Blanche Wakim of Wheeling, Angela Donnelly of Wheeling, and Anne deAguiar of Michigan; a brother, George John Wakim and his wife, Erma of Wheeling; five grandchildren, Ryan J. Wakim, J. Laura Wakim, Jenna M. Wakim, Isabel Gionnis and Nathan “Chris” Wakim; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, Thursday and Friday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Saturday, April 17, 2010 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Wheeling. Committal services will then be held at Mount Calvary Cemetery Bishops Chapel, Wheeling, with full military funeral honors provided by United States Navy and the Moundsville Veteran’s Honor Guard.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301, Attn: Gift Processing.
