VIRGINIA BEACH – Maxine Rose Sterling, 64, of the 700 block of Terrace Ave., lost her battle with cancer March 9, 2008, in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. A native of the Norview section in Norfolk, Maxine was the only child of Albert McKenzie Rose and Dorothy Ivy Rose.

She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Randy Sterling.

Maxine graduated from Old Dominion University in 1971 and earned her master’s degree at Mississippi State University in 1978. Maxine taught health and physical education in Norfolk and Virginia Beach for 25 years, retiring from Parkway Elementary in 1999. After retirement, she worked at Lillian Vernon as a customer service trainer and at the Virginia Beach Convention Center as a ticket taker and event staffer. She was a passionate teacher and loyal friend and loving wife. Her great joy was traveling and cruising all of over the world. She was an active member of St. Francis Episcopal Church working in the ECW and was the past senior warden on the vestry.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Francis Episcopal Church, 509 S. Rosemont Road, Virginia Beach.

The family will meet with friends at a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to any cancer foundation.

Altmeyer Funeral Home, Maestas Chapel, 1801 Baltic Avenue, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23451 is in charge of the arrangements.
