Mary K. Whitehurst Sweeney, 88, of Wheeling, died Saturday, September 22, 2001, at home. She was born in Petersburg, Ill. on November 8, 1922, a daughter of the late Charles and Helen Brandt Whitehurst.

Mary was retired from the Warwood Tool Company and was a member of the St. Michael Catholic Church, Wheeling. She was also tresurer and past president of Petroplus Towers Tenants Association.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence T. ”Mike” Sweeney on January 1, 1965.

Surviving are a son, Charles Michael ”Chuck” Sweeney of Hayward, California; a daughter, Mary Sharon Plants and her husband, James W. of Wheeling; two brothers, Hank Whitehurst and his wife, Jean and Dale Whitehurst and his wife, Rosemary, all of Petersburg, Ill.; two grandchildren, James Michael ”Mike” Plants and his wife, Terry and Lori K. Plants, all of Wheeling; and a great-grandson, Corey Plants of Wheeling.

Friends will be received on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger St., Elm Grove, where Vigil services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Sobus as celebrant. Interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Red Cross to aid the victims of our nation’s recent tragedy. These donations can be made to the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Red Cross, 193-29th St., Wheeling, WV 26003.
