Mary K. Ferebee

NORFOLK – Mary Elizabeth Keys Ferebee, 89, crossed over Jordan on Sunday May 16th, 2010. Born January 31, 1921 to James Bradford and Tabitha Jane Billings Keys on a farm in Dardanelle Arkansas, she spent most of her adult life in Tidewater Virginia. She was predeceased by her eldest daughter, Florence Ann Ferebee Pope; and four brothers and two sisters: Bruce, Clarence, Clara, Carl, Clora and George.
Mary attended nursing school in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Army Flight School in Texas and met her husband, Oscar Benson Ferebee Jr., at Hickham Field in Hawaii on V.J. Day where, as a 2nd Lt. in the Army Air Corp and a Flight Nurse, she served during WWII. She loved bird watching, gardening, cooking, and quilting, making an elegant science of keeping an immaculate home.
She is survived by two daughters, Amy Elizabeth Ferebee Supan of Norfolk, VA. and Mary Keys Ferebee Maddox of Spartanburg, SC.; seven grandchildren, Lexa Pope of Palo Alto, CA., Sara Pope Agelasto of Nellysford, VA., Finn Supan of Richmond, VA., Joshua Supan of Pittsburgh, PA., Ferebee Tunno of Jonesboro, AR., Cyrus Maddox of Chicago, IL., and McGee Maddox of Toronto, Canada; several nieces and nephews; and Jackson and Bernice Pope who embraced our Nana as one of their own.
The Family is deeply grateful for the excellent care Mary received from the skillful and attentive staffs of Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital and Odyssey Hospice Care, with special thanks going to Nori Walters, Julie Aigle, Judy McDonald and Gloria Wiggins for going beyond the call of duty to keep our loved one safe and comfortable.
A graveside celebration will be held on Sunday May 30th, 12:00pm in Forest Lawn on Granby St. in Norfolk.

Amy & Mary,

So sorry for your loss. Your mother was a beautiful person both inside and out. We always looked forward to her coming to visit her brother Bruce. I know you will have sweet memories of your mother and that you can take comfort in knowing that she’s at peace in her heavenly home with her Lord and Savior.

Dear Amy,

I’m thinking of you today as you lay your dear mother to rest. May you find solace in family and all your friends. I’m so sorry for your loss, Lynn.

Dear Keysie,

I was so sorry to see that you lost both of your parents. It’s difficult to lose one and I hope you are finding a lot of strength through your husband, children and friends.

It was good to see you briefly at the Piedmont Club in April. The reunion was a good one despite the low attendance.

Take care, and you are in my thoughts. Love, Lynnie

Hello! My name is Karen Roper Cook. I have always heard Of Mary Keys and so sad to learn of her passing. My grandmother, Nelle Roper, has always told me stories of Mary Keys the WWII nurse and girlfriend of my uncle Glendon

Roper. I never met my uncle Sgt. Gledon Roper who was killed by enemy fire in WWII. I recently became intrigued by photos and letters. Some letters written by Mary were to Glen’s parents even after his death. Glad to hear she had a long and full life. I hope someone will respond.

Keysie and Family,

I just signed your father’s guestbook the other day. I had no idea your mother had predeceased him by only a few days. She was a dear woman. What you all must be going through; it’s so sad and so much at one time. My heart goes out to you. Keysie, you have my email address, but I do not have yours; do get in touch when you have recovered to some extent and have the time.

Again, love and prayers…

Susan
