TOPP, Mary Ellen “Tippy” Carter, 72, of Wheeling, W.Va., died Friday, October 14, 2011 at Liza’s Place Valley Hospice.
She was born March 2, 1939, in Wheeling, a daughter of the late Harlan P. II and Lois Boyd Carter. She was a member of the Covenant Community Church in Wheeling.
She was the 1957 West Virginia State Dairy Princess. She was also a member of the Wheeling Garden Club, and a board member of the Friends of Wheeling. She sang in the Vance Church Choir for 15 years, and with the Ohio Valley Chorale. Before returning to the Wheeling area in 1981, she was an active member of Lord of Life Lutheran church and choir in Fairfax, Va. She was certified as a Medical Technologist, and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in business from West Liberty University. She worked 20 years for H&R Block in executive tax services.
She is survived by her loving husband, David P. Topp of Wheeling; one son, David A. Topp Carol of Cincinnati, Ohio; one daughter, Katherine E. Topp of Shelton, Wash.; two sisters, Margaret Andre of Livonia, Mich. and Ruth Lewis Lynn of Birmingham, Mich.; one brother, Harlan P. Carter III Jeanne of Wheeling; two granddaughters, Emily Topp and Sarah Topp; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received Tuesday, October 18, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11 a.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, W.Va. with Rev. Barry Taylor officiating.
