Mary Ellen Smathers, 77 of Winter Garden, Florida, formerly of Pipe Creek Road, Jacobsburg, Ohio, died Monday, April 8, 2002 in Health Central Hospital, Ocoee, Florida. She was born June 11, 1924 in Chauncey, Ohio, a daughter of the late Donald and Ethel Maude Speelman Cunningham.

She was a retired nurse for Dr. Asaad, Inc. Glen Dale, West Virginia, a member of the South Bellaire United Methodist Church and the Gleamers Sunday School Class at South Bellaire United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter A. Smathers.

Surviving are her children, Walter C. Skip Smathers and his wife Emily of Clyde, Ohio; Cynthia CindyGalloway and her husband Keith of Jefferson, Maryland; Kris Dawson and her husband Mike of Orlando, Florida; and Monica Matthews and her husband Jack of Asheville, North Carolina; eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 PM on Friday at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Home, 3900 Central Avenue Shadyside, Ohio and Saturday from 9 AM until time of services at 1 PM with the Reverend Randy Cetorelli officiating.

Interment in Powhatan Cemetery, Powhatan Point, Ohio.

Family and friends are invited to attend a luncheon following the services at the South Bellaire United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the South Bellaire United Methodist Church, 23rd and Belmont Street, Bellaire, Ohio.
