Norfolk – Mary Ella Abernethy Bowen, 96, left this world, peacefully at home, Feb. 18, 2008. She entered into Heaven joining her husband, Thomas B. Bowen Sr., and parents Robert and Leola Abernethy of Stanley, N.C. She was also greeted by her sibling, Edgar Abernethy, Robert Abernethy, Julia Robinson, Mildred Hallman, Betty Smith and Marjorie Hannifin, also of Stanley, N.C. Those left behind to cherish her sweet memory are her children, Tom and Marie Bowen of Moore, Okla., Robert and Helen Bowen of Fredericksburg, Va., and Dolores Cooper and her daughter-in-law, Katie Wall of Norfolk.
She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren in Virginia and across the United States, Michael Bowen, Larry and Denise Bowen, David Bowen, Renee and Bruce Barnes, Jack and Kathy Bowen, Margie Ella Peden, Donna and Tim Roy, Angie and Sean Cassidy Sr., Bob and Raina Bowen, Brian Bowen, Allen and Michelle Bowen and Robin Cooper; and great-grandchildren, Boston Laughrey, Kyle Bowen, Erik Bowen, Mandy Ellis, Jonathan Barnes, Joseph Barnes, Derek Bowen, Ryan Bowen, Robert Peden, Trey Peden, Matthew Peden, Taylor Roy, Matthew Roy, Chrystina Demchak, Nathan Demchak, Mary Cassidy, Sean Cassidy Jr., Michael Bowen, James Bowen, Christopher Cowan, Alexis Bowen, Andrew Bowen, Darian Cooper and Robert Allen; also eight great-great-grandchildren. Mary also leaves behind many wonderful friend, naming a few – Ovenea Fisher, George and Gwen Pullen, June Bishop, Marian Belinski, Rodney and Pat Hurst, Betsy Stewart, Pastor Joe Shepherd and her other numerous friends at Norview United Methodist Church, where she was a faithful member for more than 60 years.
She was a native of Stanley N.C., where she studied cosmetology, becoming a beautician. She met and married Tom Bowen and moved to Norfolk early in the 1940s. In 1959, he passed away leaving her to provide for her young children. She returned to work as a beautician, continuing to work until she was 79 years old.
As a testament to her ever giving nature, even to the very end, she donated her body to science, so there will not be a funeral. There will, however, be a celebration of her life at the Norview United Methodist Church. The celebration of her life has not been scheduled yet, but an announcement will posted in the paper when the plans have been finalized. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Lewy Body Dementia Foundation, LBDA, P.O. Box 451429, Atlanta, GA 31145-9429. Mary suffered with this form dementia and since it was only discovered recently, much study needs to be done to determine medications for treatment, and, hopefully, a cure. Momma, I treasure all the time I was able to share with you. You were always a guiding example, for everyone, for how to live and love. I have so many wonderful memories of our trips with Peggy and Vickie. What joys we shared!! Please give them both a hug from me!

Thank you for your understanding and non-judgemental loving ways. I miss you terribly, but your wonderful memory will be with me always. I look forward to see you again, and so look forward to seeing you walking upright and able to see, and enjoy life again.

This lovely lady was in my life for many years. We lived next door to her until I was 15 years old. Dolores has been my friend for over 50 years. Miss Mary will be missed, but never forgotton she will dwell in my heart forever and I will always remember her saying Dolores is Tippy on that bed. A wonderful memory for Dolores and I. I love Miss Mary and hope to see you someday at home.
