NEWPORT NEWS – Margaret E. Houts, 83, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, May 28, 2008.
Margaret was born and raised in Maplewood, Mo. She graduated from William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., in 1947 with a Bachelor’s Degree. She participated in many school activities, including basketball. She went on to complete her training in physical therapy after receiving a scholarship to attend Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Margaret worked as a physical therapist for over 35 years.
Margaret moved to Michigan to pursue her career. She met her husband, Bill, at a single’s dance in Detroit while the song Some Enchanted Evening was playing. They were married in 1954 at the Central Methodist Church in Detroit. They lived in Dearborn, Mich., where they raised their three children. After retirement, they moved to the Traverse City, Mich., area where they also enjoyed many happy years together. Margaret and Bill were members of Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City until their recent move to Newport News, Va.
Margaret was very active in political, social, church, and community activities. She and Bill loved to travel and visited many countries around the world. She enjoyed painting, nature/outdoor activities, children, and animals. She was a very spiritual person and her love of the Lord was reflected in her life.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband and best friend of over 53 years, Wilburn G. Bill Houts; one brother, Charles Borth of Glendale, Mo.; two daughters, Liz Burroughs and husband, Bob, of Newport News and Julie Davis and husband, Daryl, of Lebec, Calif.; one son, Jim Houts and wife, Paula, of Ramsey, Minn.; and many other family members, including her grandchildren, and friends.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at Denbigh Presbyterian Church, 302 Denbigh Blvd., Newport News.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60601-7633; or the Peninsula SPCA, 523 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.
