Margaret Ann Maxwell Dudley Carney, of Wheeling, died Saturday, May 31, 2008 in Continuous Care Center, Wheeling.

Margaret was born December 11, 1924 in Steubenville, Ohio, a daughter of the late John and Ada Maxwell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, John Dudley; second husband, Thomas Carney; a daughter, Diane Edwards; and a great-granddaughter, Sara Dudley.

Surviving are her son, Jack Dudley Mary of Wheeling; three daughters, Margaret Garcia Gabriel of Florida, Susan Hurst James of Charleston, W.Va. and Patricia Szalay Charles of Wheeling; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Margaret was a registered nurse from 1948 to 1980. She worked as county nurse in Hancock County, New Cumberland, W.Va., and at Good Shepherd Nursing Home and the Northern Panhandle Mental Health Center in Wheeling.

Her family and friends were her life. Here is a published poem she wrote in 1974: “Thoughts on Passing” – I hear voices soft and low, They whisper death, As if I didn’t know. They say I can’t hear, speak or see, How do they know? They are not inside of me. I hear a voice ask, I wonder how she lived? Would you believe, The things you do now, I once did. Across my mind the years flash by, all the laughter, love and pain, My spouse, my children, I had the world to gain. I feel a tear upon my cheek, A hand upon my brow, Don’t weep, I shall be with God, In just a little while. Suddenly the room is bright, Choirs of angels nod, I can at last reach out, And touch the hand of God.

She will be missed by family, friends and anyone whose lives she touched with her warmth, love, compassion and generosity.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, Tuesday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with the Rev. Edwin Keel as celebrant. Interment will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Weirton, W.Va.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul School 127 Key Avenue, Wheeling, WV 26003.

Dearest Friend and Neighbor,

As sad as I am that you are gone I have a sense of great joy knowing that such a wonderful human being has been taken into God’s waiting arms to live in peace and tranquility. I have known you for almost 28 years and the bond we formed was heartwarming. We have laughed and cried and shared deep moments of reflection. We have held each other up in times of need. I will miss you beyond measure but will carry you in my heart always.
