Obituary for
Kenneth H. Mooney
Age 78

Kenneth L. Mooney, 78 of East Ruby Drive, Calcutta, died at Essex of Salem on Wednesday, November 25, 2008 following a lengthy illness. He was born in Yorkville, Ohio on January 23, 1930 a son of the late Ross and Elizabeth Ulbright Mooney.

Living most of his life in this area, Mr. Mooney graduated in 1948 from Newell High School and attended Kent State University. After joining the East Liverpool Police Department on June 9, 1958, he was promoted to Lieutenant and then Captain, when he became in charge of the Detective Bureau. Ken became Chief of Police in 1974 and retired in 1980. While here in East Liverpool he taught in the Criminal Justice Program at Jefferson County Community College, was a member of Masonic Lodge 681 and a past member of Elks Lodge # 258. After retirement, Mr. Mooney moved to Florida working for the Harris Corp. with in- house security. He returned to East Liverpool in 2006. He was a veteran of the US Army.

Survivors include, his wife: Dorothy Sanford Mooney whom he married in 1953; two sons: Michael K. Mooney of Frostproof, FL. and Mark A. Mooney of Littleton, CO; one daughter: Cynthia A. Young and her husband, Fred, of Malabar, FL; one brother: Carl Mooney of Newell, WV; three grandchildren, Ericka Mooney of New York, Robert Mooney of Idaho, and Mitchell Young of Florida and one great grandchild.

In addition to his parents, one brother: Al Mooney preceded him in death.

Services will be held at the Calcutta Chapel of the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes on Monday, December 1, 2008 at 1:30 PM with Rev. Ethel Dunaway of the United Methodist Church in Newell, WV officiating.

Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery where the Tri State Burial Group and the West Virginia National Guard will accord military honors.

The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home in Calcutta on Sunday, November 30, 2008 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM where Masonic Services will be held at 7:00 PM.

The family requests Memorial Contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Youngstown, OH 44512 or The Alzheimer Association, Greater Youngstown Chapter, 3696 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite 301B, Canfield, OH 44406.

Dorothy and Family, We want to express our deep sorrow for the loss of Kenny. I especially enjoyed him playing the pump organ at Christmas time. He will live on in our hearts. Much Love!

I’m sorry for your loss. I’m so glad I had the chance to meet You and Kenny while working for OVHC. You’ve both made an impact on my life. Although we’ll all miss him, he’s in a better place now.

Through my work at The Review, I met and worked with Ken for a number of years. While I never met any of his family, I will always cherish the conversations and joint work experiences we had. My prayers are with each and all of his family.
