Josephine Ammriante

April 6, 1920 - January 14, 2015

04/06/1920 - 01/14/2015

Josephine Fiorino Ammirante, 94, of Wheeling, died Wednesday, January 14, 2015, in Good Shepherd Nursing Home surrounded by her family.

She was born April 6, 1920 in Cosenza, Italy, the daughter of the late Paulo and Louisa Fiorino. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Jerry 1991. After marrying, in October of 1939, they traveled to the United States with their son, Jenuzzo, who later passed away in 1950 at the age of 10. Here, she was a homemaker and they owned and operated Jerry’s Grocery Store for over 35 years. She is a member St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

She is survived by two children, Anna Marie Battista Bob and Gene Ammirante Pam; four grandchildren, J.R. Battista Christine, Jerry Ammirante Katie, Stacy Kolb Joe, and Lindsey Ammirante; four great grandchildren, Jeana Battista, Cooper Kolb, Milano Ammirante, and Alaina Kolb, all of Wheeling.

Josephine’s name could have been spelled “FAMILY”. She succeeded everyday in creating a loving home for her family. She was an extraordinary cook and her greatest joy was in cooking for her family. It wasn’t just the meals, it was the valuable lessons intertwined in the gathering.

Friends and family will be received, Sunday, January 18, 2015 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger Street, Elm Grove with a Vigil Services being held at 7 pm. Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, January 19, 10am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Naegele as celebrant. Interment will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the Good Shepherd Nursing Home for surrounding their mother and them with love and support. There are “Angels Among Us”, especially “Assunta” and all of Three South staff.

Anna, Gene, Bob, and Pam, along with JR. and other grandchildren,

I am very sorry for your loss. I know during Josephine’s stay in the nursing home, Bob often told me about your families care and love for her. I have to believe she was a major influence in Anna and Gene’s lives. Most Italian women are. My mom was born in Italy as well. I know! I apologize that I will be in Medina Sunday for a nieces birthday. I would have attended for my absolute respect for all of you. May her memory remain eternal. May she be escorted by Angels. Peace be with all of you. Bob

Heaven has received a beautiful angel. I am so sorry to hear of Josephine’s passing. She was a wonderful lady whom I have always loved from my childhood and will forever. My heart is saddened by her passing, but I know she is happy to be with Jerry again, and I know my mother was there to greet her in Heaven. I’m just so sorry that when I went to visit her, that she was sleeping and I didn’t get to talk with her. My condolences to Gene, Anna and family, and I send my love to all.

I had the pleasure of taking care of Josephine, she was a very special lady. She always had a smile every morning when I would go into her room. We would talk about cooking and how much we liked our morning coffee. She will truly be missed. Prayers and condolences to the family.

Josephine was a wonderful person who I got a chance to care for. We always talked about those Italian meals that she made for her family. Josephine and I shared the same birthday so I would tease her and say I’ll bring the cake if you make the spaghetti she would just give me a big old smile , she will be sadly missed.

So sorry for your loss. I have good memories of your mom. Once she made spaghetti for us so we could taste real Italian homemade sauce. Another time she asked me if I had ever tasted almond juice and made me taste it because I hadn’t. She was always very kind. God bless her.

Was sorry to hear about “Mrs Ammriate”. Even though I only knew her at Good Shepherd, everytime I stopped to see her, she gave me her heartwarming smile. She was exactly what I would have picked for a grandmother. I will miss her.
