Joseph D. Erbacher, Jr. 74, of Wheeling, WV passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Wheeling, on January 8, 1935, the oldest child of the late Joseph and Alma Schafer Erbacher, Sr.
Joe was a 1952 graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School, and a life time member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. His lifetime work was in produce, starting as a young man in Centre Market with Jebbia Brothers and later with Megna Brothers until their closing in 1989. He retired from Jebbia’s Produce Market in 2005. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Columbia Council # 2593 and a Grand Knight. His hobbies included bowling, puzzles of all types, spending time with his family and helping all who needed him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Patrick Erbacher and his sister Sandy Theiss.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Dorothy E. Roth Erbacher, his children; Joseph Becky Erbacher, III, and Deborah Bob Gessler of Wheeling, Linda Dave Wodesky of Colerain, OH, and Kimberly Jimmy Rykowski of Cadiz, OH; his brothers, Larry Betsy Erbacher of Cadiz, OH, Mike Pearl Welty and brother-in-law Fred Theiss, Sr., both of Wheeling; his sisters, Rose Robert Henry of Wheeling, Rita Jerome Affeldt of Tacoma, WA, Judy Ted Glatz of Wheeling, Libby Don Reed of McMechen, Nancy Geoghan of Bellaire, OH, Sue McLaughlin of Wheeling and sister-in-law Barbara Erbacher of Cadiz; Grandchildren, Chris Diane Erbacher, Craig fiancée Cori Breeden Erbacher, Emily Albert Russell, Bill Debbie Gooch, Marci Bob Gaylor, Frank Gessler, Meghan fiancé Jeremy Johns Wodesky, Michelle Wodesky, Eric Wodesky, Tina Marie Rykowski; Great Grandchildren, Craig “C.J.” Erbacher, Jr., Becca Breeden, Billy Gooch, Anna Gaylor and numerous nieces and nephews, and his lifetime friends from St. Alphonsus Grade School Class of 1948.
Friends will be received at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, WV. on Friday from 2 – 8 pm. Knights of Columbus will stand Honor Guard.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 9:30 am at St. Alphonsus Church with the Rev. Fr. Charles McGinnis, celebrant.
Entombment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, Wheeling.
Memorial contributions may be made in Joe’s memory to Valley Hospice, 10686 State Route 150, Rayland, OH 43943.
