KALTENBACH, Joseph Charles, Jr. 83, of Wheeling W.Va., died Saturday May 22, 2004 in the Bishop Joseph H. Hodges Continuous Care Center, Wheeling.
He was born in Wheeling on June 30, 1920, a son of the late Joseph C. and Kathleen Gilligan Kaltenbach.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Kathleen Kaltenbach Vater and a dear friend, Kitty Doepkin.
Joe graduated from Central Catholic High School and studied electrical, engineering at Notre Dame University. In July of 1941 he entered the U.S. Army Signal Corps and was one of 500 men that were made members of the British Royal Air Force to study radar and bring the technology back to the U.S. Armed Forces. He later worked as a sound engineer for Gee Electric and RCA. He was the life of every parts, playing the piano or other instruments. He gathered an extensive library of books and musical recordings. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Joseph is survived by a sister, Ruth Smisko and her husband Joseph of Wadsworth, Ohio; four nephews: Eugene Vater, Stephen Vater, Thomas Vater and Daniel Smisko; five nieces: Kathleen Vater Mortenson, Maureen Vater Hiner, Betsy Smisko Wunderlich, Marianne Smisko Brucker and Kate Smisko Cahill; fifteen great-nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, W.Va.
Funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Thursday May 27, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church, National Road, Wheeling, with the Rev. James Sobus as celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling. Vigil services will be held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
