VIOLA, Joseph A., 81, formerly of Elm Grove, died Monday, June 23, 2003. He was a retired Mail Handler for the U.S. Postal Service and an Army veteran of World War ll, where he was awarded the Purple Heart, a Presidential Citation and three Bronze Stars. His company, Company B the 9th Armored Tank Division, 14th Tank Battalion of Patton’s 3rd Army was responsible for taking over the bridge at Ramagen, Germany. He was involved in three campaigns during World War ll, the Belgium Bulge Campaign, the Rhineland Campaign and the Central Europe Campaign. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, the Elm Grove Civics and the American Legion; a past member of the Board of Directors at Wheeling Hospital; and a former member of the VFW and the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine A. Setticase Viola in 1995; a grandson, Anthony Allan Viola in 2001; and his parents, Pete and Lucia Manderick Viola. Surviving is a son, Peter E. Viola of Elm Grove; a daughter, Lucia Shinsky and her husband, Gary, of Elm Grove; two brothers, Manuel Viola and his wife, Rosalia, of Wheeling and James Viola and his wife, Mary, of Pittsburgh; three sisters, Caroline Matson and her husband, Joseph, of Elm Grove, Anna Chiazza of Elm Grove and Josephine Hoffman and her husband, Lee, of Pittsburgh; and two grandsons, Adam Shinsky and Vinnie Viola of Elm Grove. Friends will be received from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger Street, Elm Grove where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Wheeling with the Rev. Thomas W. Dagle as celebrant. Interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society, 2 Gateway Center, Pittsburgh, PA.

I am so sorry for your loss I know it is hard but they time will heal I just lost my father in May and it is very hard may god bless you and your family my prays our with you

I’m so sorry to read of Joe’s death. As a child I remember walking along Bridge Street and often seeing the Viola and Chiazza children on their front porch. That all seems so long ago.

I have fond memories of playing in the orchestra with both Rosalie and Jack.
