DAVIS, John Woodrow, Sr., 82, formerly of McMechen, died Saturday, June 14, 2008 in Lancia Villa Royale Nursing Home, Wintersville, Ohio.

John was born December 8, 1925 in Shinnston, W.Va., a son of the late Leo and Maggie Stiles Davis. He was retired from Bloch Brothers Tobacco Co, Wheeling; a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Moundsville and was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in World War II. He was also the former Post Commander for the Disabled American Veterans, Marshall County Chapter No. 15, and member of the V.F.W., McMechen and American Legion, Post No. 46, Benwood.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Ellen Hughes Davis; a son, John W. Davis, II.; three brothers, Dale, James and Fred Davis; and a sister, Mildred Williams.

John is survived by two sons, Patrick E. Davis and his wife, Linda, and Michael T. Davis and his wife, Penny, all of Moundsville; a brother, Thomas Davis of Rome, N.Y.; four sisters, June Williams and her husband, Denzil of Worthington, W.Va., Iris Miller of Grafton, W.Va., Erma Mae Johnson of Deerfield, Ohio and Viola Brown and her husband, Jerry of Meadowbrook, W.Va.; a granddaughter, Barbara Applegarth of Moundsville; four grandsons, John Davis, III and Edward Davis of Ambridge, Pa., and Patrick Davis, II and Travis Davis of Moundsville; and several great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, Monday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Lutes & Kirby-Vance Chapel, 118 Grant Avenue, Moundsville, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Moundsville. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, with full military honors provided by the Moundsville Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
