John Vcelka, 87, of Wheeling, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003 in Bishop Joseph H. Hodges Continuous Care Center, Wheeling.
He was born May 16, 1915 in Bannock, Ohio, the son of the late Stefan and Maria Uher Vcelka.
He was a former superintendent at the Shoemaker and McElroy coal mines; an Army veteran of World War II; and a member of the Wheeling Elks Lodge #28, Moundsville Country Club and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Wheeling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Andy, Jimmy and Steve Vcelka; a granddaughter, Janine Vcelka Kennedy; and his step-mother, Katherine Vcelka.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Lillian N. Sulek Vcelka; a son, John "Butch" Vcelka and wife, Joan, of Chicago, Ill.; two daughters, Linda Rice and husband, Don of Moundsville, WV and Suzanna Knight and husband, Roy, of Grafton, WV.; eight grandchildren, Donald Rice, Kimberly Rice, Jacquie Vcelka Vu, John Vcelka Jr., Wendy Knight Donham, Jean Knight, John Knight and Nancy Knight Bozic; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger St., Wheeling. Funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Wheeling with the Rev. H. Joseph Wilhelm, S.M. as celebrant.
Vigil services will be held 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Military services and interment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
