John S. Kovalchie Jr. "Red," 85, of Wheeling, died Monday, August 25, 2003 in Wheeling Hospital.
John was born February 7, 1918 in Martins Ferry, Ohio, a son of the late John S. Sr. and Eva Mucha Kovalchie.
He was retired meat salesman for Rath Packing Co., but began his career at the John Wenzel Meat Packing Co. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, where he served as an usher, was former member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Ukranian Catholic Church, and was an Army veteran. In addition, John loved spending time at the Ye Olde Alpha Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Paluch and Mary Kepen.
Surviving are his three children, John S. Kovalchie III and his wife Tina of Wheeling, Donna Stahl and her husband Ron of Irvine, CA and Nancy Barnett and her husband David of Valley Grove; three sisters, Helen Siewny and her husband Alex of Wheeling, Katherine "Kitty" Scarlet of Rockford, IL and Rosella George and her husband Nick of Wheeling; a brother, Walter Kovalchie and his wife Dottie of Wheeling; three grandchildren, Ronald Stahl Jr. and his wife Wanda of White Oaks, TX, Christy Stahl of California and John S. Kovalchie IV and his wife Kimberly of Canton, OH and a great-grandson, Nicholas Stahl.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger St., Elm Grove, Wheeling, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday August 28, 2003 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Wheeling, with the Rev. James Sobus as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
The family suggest that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
