POPP, John, 84, of Wolfe’s Drive, Bethlehem, Wheeling, formerly of South Wheeling, died Tuesday January 27, 2004 in Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling.
John was born August 15, 1919 in Loraine, OH, a son of the late Steve and Mary Seledi Popp.
He was retired from United Dairy, a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and the former St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, Wheeling, and was an avid golfer. He was also a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, where he was received two purple hearts and the Bronze Star, and was a member of the Military Order of Purple Heart, Chapter #709.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, George and Steve Popp.
Surviving are his loving wife of 57 years, Jane D. Kalisz Popp; a sister, Viola Berze and her husband Jasper of Tiltonsville, OH; a nephew, Bill Kalisz and his wife Cathy of Wheeling; a great-niece, Delphine Zelaski and her husband David of North Carolina and several additional nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 1-3 and 6-8 pm Thursday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 3828 Jacob Street, South Wheeling, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm Thursday evening.
Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am Friday, January 30, 2004 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Wheeling, with the Rev. Patrick Condron as celebrant. Entombment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, Wheeling.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Alphonsus Community Youth Center, 2111 Market Street, Wheeling.
