Newport News – CW02 Ret. John R. Lawrence, 84, died peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, May 14, 2008. Mr. Lawrence was born
Juanito Ramirez Lorenzana in Bintawan, Villa Verde Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines on Sept. 6, 1923. He has been a Peninsula resident since 1966. He retired from the US Army in 1971 after 26 years of service. He was a veteran of WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. During his military service, he earned numerous honors including the Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Newport News, the PACP Philippine-American Community of the Peninsula, the VFW Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4809, The American Legion Post 368, and the Knights of Columbus Council No.5480.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosario A. Lawrence. He leaves behind two children, Divina and Bert Soto of Newport News; a sister Fely Montenegro of Castro Valley, CA.; three nieces – Avelina Casteneda of Springfield, VA.’ Mary Lou Cruz of Yorktown, VA.;
Diana Gutierrez of Newport News, VA.; a grandson, Larry Rojas of Richmond, VA.; a good friend, Gertrudes Rabusa of Newport News, VA.; and numerous relatives in the Philippines.
Viewings will take place at Altmeyer Funeral Home – Denbigh Chapel, 12893 Jefferson Ave. Newport News, VA, 23608. A public viewing will be from 11 am to 4 pm, Thursday, May 22, 2008 and the wake for family and friends will be from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, Friday, May 23, 2008. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Newport News. Interment with military honors will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News.
