BASIL, John A., 85 of Wheeling, WV, died Monday, November 17, 2008 in Wheeling Hospital.
He was born June 7, 1923 in Phoenix, WV, a son of the late Anthony and Angela Moran Basil.
John enjoyed working in his garden, was a former employee of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, East Steubenville Plant, a member of St. Joseph Cathedral and the former Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, Wheeling, an Army veteran of WWII serving in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, with the 201st Infantry, a member of the Cave Club, American Legion Post #1 and Elm Grove VFW.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Joe, Frank and Sam Basil, three sisters, Rose Traugh, Vicky Mallery, Mary Swerkes.
Surviving is his loving wife of 61 years, Theresa Camilletti Basil, married on Jan. 11, 1947, four children, Mary Margaret Molnar and her husband Steve of Dayton, OH; Tina Coleman and her husband Greg of Ft. Myers, FL; John Thomas Basil of Wheeling; Rosanne McNickle and her husband Shannon of Sunset Heights, OH; one brother, Lewis Basil of Durham, NC; one sister, Catherine Trotta of Winter Haven, FL; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Cooper, Lydia Baker, Gregory Coleman, Stephen Coleman, Audra Lewicki, Evan John Basil, Jessica Dutton, two great grandchildren, Sydney and Jackson Baker.
Friends received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling where vigil services will be held at 7:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 21, 2008 in St. Joseph Cathedral, Wheeling, with Rev. Kevin Quirk as celebrant.
Military graveside honors conducted in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
